What to look for in a Family car

BUDGET 

Buying a family car is slightly different to buying a car for commuting or the single life. Family cars tend to be larger and therefore more expensive. When you go to view your options at a used car market or auction make sure you know what you’re looking for.

When you know the type and style of car you want It makes it easier to budget. It also makes it easier to identify the type of car that’s right for you. Buying a used car is a bit of a lottery so be prepared to negotiate, you might want to budget extra for this. 

SEATS 

For a family car you want a seating arrangement that provides a space for each family member. You might also want an extra seat or two for newcomers. Most family cars are five seaters but larger vehicles such as estates and SUVs can have up to seven seats. 

The advantage of having a larger vehicle such as an estate or SUV for your family is the options it gives you for seating and transport. Not only can you fit in the whole family with room to spare but the back seats fold down giving you room to transport large items.  

FUNCTIONALITY 

The functionality of your new family vehicles may not be a deal breaker but it can and should influence the decision you make. Do you want a vehicle without a modern infotainment system or one that lacks smartphone integration? Unlikely in today’s world. 

An effective infotainment system can work wonders on long road trips with the kids, similarly, an integrated smartphone function means you can drive hands free all the time, and you never have to worry about handling a Sat Nav – this keeps you and your family safe while driving. 

CLEANING 

If you have kids already you know how hard it is to keep the house clean and tidy. It seems like a never ending job. Your family car is likely to be the same, but there are ways you can reduce the effort needed by buying a vehicle that facilitates easy valet services. 

Some car interiors are made using angular hard plastic. This design might look functional but when you have kids in there the dirt and grime starts to build up in the corners and edges. Counteract this by analysing the car’s interior at the Car dealer and investing in one with smooth edges. 

MAINTENANCE 

When you buy an older car it stands to reason that you have higher maintenance costs. The car will have a higher mileage and will require more servicing and garage costs sooner than a newer model. You might get a cheaper up front cost but factor in your medium term investment. 

One alternative to a used gas powered vehicle is an electric vehicle, or EV. These may be out of your price range to buy but there are other options. You could, for instance, invest in a higher purchase agreement, or even lease the car. EVs have almost zero maintenance costs.
