The Lure of the Algarve

I love living in Dorset for our breathtaking cliffs and golden beaches but sometimes the lure of somewhere warmer gets to me, especially with the weather being so changeable this year.

One place I would love to visit is the Algarve in Portugal after Hubby sung its praises after a long weekend away with the boys. The coast of the Algarve reminds me of Dorset with breathtaking cliffs, golden beaches, scalloped bays and sandy islands so I imagine it would be a home from home – only warmer.

Whilst much the of Algarve’s appeal to some is activities, beach bars, castles (of the sandy kind and real), diving, entertainment and non stop fun, there is still plenty to see that is off the beaten track.

The enchanting inner Algarve boasts pretty castle towns and historic villages, cork tree and flower-covered hillsides, and birdlife. If you are feeling energetic then the wonderful Via Algarviana walking track crosses its breadth, although at 300km in length you’d probably have to pick and choose which part you joined.

I adore being on the sea and the Algarve offers many trips to explore the coastline and wildlife of the area. Can you imagine racing along on a RIB in search of Dolphins or diving in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic.

If you fancy some culture then they is plenty of public transport available to take you too and from Portugal’s capital Lisbon. I would love to see the romanist Palace Da Pena which is located in the Sintra Hills.

Accommodation is plentiful in the Algarve with a choice of budget options like hostels and apartments to hotels and Villa holidays which are best suited to families.

Like most destinations some are more suited to those who want to party on holiday like Albufeira, however there are more family friendly destinations such as Praia da Rocha, most of the central Algarve. If culture is more to your taste then Lagos, Tavira, Faro and Silves are the best options.

I know if we visited Portugal that a visit to Porto would be in order for my sports mad Hubby as he would want to visit the Estádio do Dragão stadium and museum and maybe even take in a match if we timed it right.

Have you been to Portugal, where would you recommend we visit?
