The cheapest last-minute destinations for a February half-term beach holiday

Striking the right balance between great weather and budget-friendly can seem tricky, especially when it comes to half-term holidays, but there are some destinations that offer excellent value for money, especially if you wait and book last-minute. While you do have to allow for some flexibility in terms of destination, date and departure airport, your cost savings will more than make up for it.

With this in mind, here are five suggestions for a fantastic February break with the whole family.

1. Morocco

February is part of the winter season in Morocco, making it far cheaper to holiday, but you can still expect pleasantly warm temperatures that exceed 20°C and more than enough hot days for lounging on the beach as a family.

Morocco
Just as much a beach destination as one for history buffs and curious young minds, the contrast of terrain, which includes desert, coastlines and mountains, offers excellent variety in terms of things to do. Water sports, particularly surfing, are popular, as is shopping – taking your kids through the vibrant souks is something they’ll never forget.

2. Florida

Florida is still a hugely popular half-term destination, especially in February, as it enjoys temperatures in the mid-20s. Of course, kids aren’t thinking too much about the weather when there is the promise of multiple theme parks, waterparks and buffet dinners on the horizon.

Typhoon Lagoon

For a more varied family break, consider spending one week in Orlando, experiencing the must-see tourist attractions, before travelling down to the Florida Keys where you’ll find sleepier surf towns such as Fort Myers. Less than a four-hour drive from Orlando, the Keys are a more peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of the theme parks.

3. Dubai

Dubai in February can prove to be a bargain, as it is traditionally the wettest month. Don’t be put off though, as this usually only translates into a few light showers, and the temperature stays at around 25°C.

Dubai

Dubai and excitement go hand in hand, thanks to a wide range of activities to enjoy. From beach days to theme parks, shopping, art galleries and world-famous architecture, one February half-term break won’t be enough! Add in the potential for desert safaris, indoor skiing and hot-air balloon rides and even the most hard-to-please kids will have the time of their lives.

4. Cancun

A fantastically family-friendly Mexican resort, Cancun is famous for its excellent weather (28°C average in February), picturesque beaches and fascinating history. Add in a wealth of family attractions and you have the recipe for a holiday that offers undeniable value for money.

Cancun

The beaches are ideal for learning to snorkel and dive, with the ecological park Xel-Ha taking things to new heights with zip lines and rope swings. Crococun Zoo is a must-see attraction that lets you pet and feed certain animals, while staying a healthy distance from the local crocodiles and the Maya Museum offers some insight as to the history of the region.

5. Cape Verde

Fast becoming a bucket-list destination, Cape Verde is a charming archipelago of 10 islands that benefits from various influences including African and Brazilian, so you can imagine how incredible the food and culture is.

Cape Verde

Referred to as the ‘alternative Caribbean’, Cape Verde is perfect for families that need a little winter sun as it stays in the mid-20s during February and prevents boredom with the opportunity to island hop. Kids will enjoy all of the water sports and there are various excursions to take part in, including hikes and visits to beached shipwrecks. A beach holiday with a difference and some of the most exciting food, Cape Verde is half-term heaven.

  2. Oh it’s far too tempting to book a last minute break!

Especially as I have a week off with no children thanks to differing half terms! But that would be very cruel x

  3. I don’t do high heat well so the only time I will do a warm destination is during the winter. Generally you’re safe in Florida in February but they can have old snaps, we went one year and had to buy coats. Cancun in February sounds good to me.
