Taking the #LoveFreshCherries Challenge

“Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief!”

This was a game I vividly remember playing as a child as I ate a bowl of cherries and busily lined up my cherry stones on the side of the dish.

It is a traditional English rhyme that dates back to the 15th Century and is used as a counting game for children.

It is currently British cherry season and the perfect time to teach the kids this fun rhyme whilst enjoying this delicious fruit.

Love Cherries

I have to admit that I have not introduced the kids to cherries before as I have always found them quite expensive, so was very surprised to find them in the supermarket for 99p a punnet.

Not only are cherries fun to eat, they are packed full of health benefits too.

Cherries

They contain vitamin C (100g provides 25% of the RDA of vitamin C), are a rich source of melatonin, which helps promote healthy sleep patterns, and have an abundance of antioxidants.

Love fresh cherries

Some fruits don’t do too well being packed up for a picnic, but cherries are the perfect for the job, providing a juicy snack on a hot day.

Cherry Eyes

The cherries were a big hit with all the kids. I was initially concerned by how Sebby would manage with the stone but he nibbles all the flesh around the outside and then pops it back in the punnet.

Cherries Sebastian

We popped our ‘cherry’ cherry in an orchard in the New Forest and the kids decided that they were going to plant the stones in the hope of returning to see if they have grown into trees next year!

Cherries Isaac

They all thought my rhyme was silly, but that didn’t stop them devouring the whole punnet of cherries in minutes.

Luckily I have some more!

  1. I absolutely LOVE cherries. Eaten them since I was a kid! Sometimes I get too eager and bite into one right where the stone is but usually I’m careful, especially now that I have veneers! xxx
