Taking the kids to the Theatre

Have you ever thought of taking the kids to a theatre show?

Are you worried they are too young and won’t behave?

My first tip is to choose a production they will love, as you can guarantee a toddler won’t sit through a production of Les Miserables!

We have been taking the kids to shows since they were tiny and they adore them.  There is something magical about seeing performers live on the stage and most shows aimed at children don’t go on too long.

Favourite shows for the whole family are Pantomimes as there is something for every age to enjoy but when asking Isaac and Eliza what their favourite show has been they both agree it was Disney on Ice, Dare to Dream which we saw earlier this year.

The new Disney On Ice – 100 Years of Magic – launches its tour on 26th September at Glasgow Braehead Arena and celebrates 100 years of magic in a one-of-a-kind skating spectacular featuring more than 60 Disney characters!

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Disney’s Mulan, The Lion King and Pinocchio, and Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Toy Story, take to the ice for a grand celebration.  This fanfare production promises more than 60 unforgettable Disney stars that span the decades, a sing-along score of award-winning Disney music, stunning choreography, elaborate sets and beautiful costumes.

The only problem with these shows is they rarely come anywhere near us so it usually means a long car journey which isn’t ideal, especially with little ones.  If you are travelling far it may be an idea to make a weekend of it and explore the local area too.  Using a site like IHG who have 4,700 properties in nearly 100 countries can save you a fortune on hotel prices and is really simple to use too so if you were planning to see the opening night, you could search IHG for the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport and get a great saving!

Check local theatre rules, but we always take the kids drinks and sweets in with us as it will end up costing a fortune otherwise – although make sure they don’t down their drink otherwise you will be ferrying them back and forth to the loo!  We have found that some tickets include an ice cream in the interval more recently which is a fabulous idea!

The best tip of all is to relax and enjoy it.  In family productions the kids are positively encouraged to sing, dance and shout along with the characters which makes the show even better!
