Quorn – a meat free alternative

Over the summer I was invited to try Quorn.

What the website says:

Quorn is a great tasting range, perfect for if you’re trying to eat healthier as part of an active lifestyle, watching your weight, or if you want some meat free meal inspiration. Plus products like Quorn Mince are a great source of protein, that still allows you to enjoy all of your favourite meals.

Products like Quorn Mince and Quorn Meat Free Chicken Pieces are a healthy protein source because they are high in protein, and low in saturated fat. They are also a source of fibre and can help you maintain normal bones and muscle mass – hugely useful if you lead an active lifestyle.

It’s recommended that men should consume 55g of protein every day, and women 45g. Products like Quorn Mince offer similar levels of protein to other protein sources but often with less saturated fat. You can mix Quorn with other healthy protein foods, like kidney beans, to make delicious meals. A serving of Quorn Chilli at 399 calories has more than 20g of protein and just 0.8g of saturated fat.

We tried the Quorn Mince for a family favourite of Spaghetti Bolognese and the Quorn Meat Free Chicken for Faijita’s.

Quorn

Firstly, it is a lot quicker to prepare than meat, which is an added bonus if you are in a hurry as you don’t have to wait for it to brown and cook through.

I used my normal recipe for both dishes but was sadly rumbled on both.

None of the kids would eat the Spaghetti Bolognese, even when I sprinkled cheese on the top to mask the taste.  The odd thing is, is that I also bought a Quorn lasagne ready meal which was delicious and Eliza and Isaac both wolfed it down.

The Fajita’s were as tasty as ever, the only thing that differed was the texture so I think the spices were absorbed well and gave the meat free chicken some flavour and hubby only asked after he had cleared his plate.

Would I buy Quorn again?

I would buy the meat free chicken but not the mince and am intrigued by some of their range of sandwich fillers.  I may give them a go for a change.

Have you tried Quorn?

What did you like / dislike about it?

  1. We use Quorn a lot. I find it very handy to keep in the freezer as it can be cooked from frozen. We’ve tried the mince, chicken style pieces and sausages and liked them all. The only thing we didn’t like was the ‘bacon’ which was like a shoe insole!
