Just before Christmas we were invited to the Nintendo Christmas event which saw the kids introduced to both the Wii U and the 2DS.
Prior to this, I hadn’t really understood why the 2DS would appeal to families – why not go for the 3DS instead?
The main difference of the Nintendo 2DS is a new distinctive fixed, slate form design which is perfect for new gamers as there is no worrying that the hinges will be broken by an over-zealous youngster!
The new console is designed as an entry point into, or a new way to enjoy the Nintendo handheld experience and is now available in three colour combinations, White + Red, Black + Blue and Pink + White, with a Nintendo 2DS Carrying Case (in either Red or Blue) that can be purchased separately.
The Nintendo 2DS offers additional choice and value into handheld gaming options. The Nintendo 2DS is a streamlined version of the Nintendo 3DS which will play games available for Nintendo 3DS, as well as Nintendo DS in 2D which means that Isaac can now play Kian’s Pokemon games that wouldn’t work on his DSi. It retains many of the same hardware features as the Nintendo 3DS including the same Nintendo 3DS gameplay controls, backwards compatibility with the vast existing library of Nintendo DS games, as well as wireless connectivity features such as access to Nintendo eShop as well as StreetPass and SpotPass functionality.
Setting the 2DS up is child’s play and couldn’t have been simpler, it just worked Kian entered our details and made all their Wii Me’s.
Kian and Isaac both have a DS of some variety, so the 2DS was given to Eliza. The only game we have that she is interested in at the moment is Yoshi’s New Island and she doesn’t really understand the game play, just likes making the characters run around the screen.
I am confident that the 2DS is sturdy enough to survive a drop on the floor if she is distracted and she is already compiling a list of games she wants to try out, which all happen to Disney Princess ones!
Isaac is the one who is getting the most use out of the 2DS at the moment. He has been introduced to Pokemon X & Y by his big brother and as we have both X & Y on the DS they can battle, trade and interact with each other. They don’t have to be next to each other either, as we had it working when Kian was at Nanny’s house a few miles away.
I also love the fact that I can download games direct from the internet and store them on the DS straight away, rather than having to buy them online or instore and risk the cartridge getting lost or put in the wrong box. There is also an expansion slot for increased space which you can store up to 32GB of games.
There are some other games and apps that come pre-installed on the console which are fun, like that photo app. This is where is Eliza has the most fun as she takes lots of pictures of herself pulling faces!
I used to have a DS and it looks like they’ve evolved a bit since then. I really love the camera and the fact you can play together. I do find they are so addictive though!
We are still rolling on with the Ds lite I think.
My son would have loved this when he was younger. He loved his DS so much. Now he is older he’s a big Xbox gamer but has still kept his DS
My son is only 1 and still too small for the games, but with his clear interest in my phone and tablet I believe he’ll be a fan too one day!
We are still limping along with one DSi between the two of them – although they do have a tablet to share too. They still love the camera effects on it !
Syd is desperate to get his grubby little mits on his big brothers 3DS, but understandably Max is less than keen – so I think one of these might end up on the christmas list!
Yes the 2DS was a much cheaper way of allowing our youngest to play the 3d games he is far too young for (so in 2d). I like the sleep slider switch too (I don’t think the others have that but don’t quote me on it).
Luckily we are still too young for games consoles. Although she loves screens and I don’t think it will be long x
My girl loves her DS2, she plays with the camera and the miis more than anything, but has been having fun with Pokemon too recently!
Pre-children I loved my DS, I think it will be a while before my children are playing one though.
They are cheaper than I expected. My eldest loves his dsi but we struggle to get games for it now. This might be an ideas for Christmas x
looks like they liked it! we have a wii but rarely use it, thankfully my girls prefer playing with their toys or outdoors to computer games 🙂
I still play on my Wii whenever I can. Wonder how long before J and all these boys toys take over!
My oldest hasn’t yet got a DS but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time!! I know he’d absolutely love playing on one.
Mine love their 2DS and even though we have a 3DS they generally turn the 3D bit off quite quickly as they say it hurts their eyes after a few minutes x
I only have a Wii, which rarely use! I’ve never really been into gaming, especially as so many new consoles are continuously released and tend to cost quite a bit of money, but it’s great that Nintendo have released an entry level one in the 2ds model x

I had a Ds when they first come out and absolutely loved it. I like the range of games you can get for it .
We have the DS but hadn’t really considered getting any if the others as he is happy with the one he has. I do like the idea of downloading the games straight from the internet though.
I have a DS but don’t really use it anymore, will be handy for Jack when he is a little older though
