I love living by the seaside and have never lived more than half an hour from a shoreline all of my life.
Visiting Butlins in Bognor last week, we decided to take the kids off site for a trip to the beach as I was brought up not far away and have fond memories of Bognor and its Birdman competition that we used to head across and watch every year.
As we walked up to the promenade Isaac’s first reaction was priceless – he exclaimed “Mum, why are there stones on the beach?”
He seemed most unhappy there was no sand until we pointed out that this sort of beach was fantastic for skimming stones. I have to admit I was a bit rusty but soon got the hang of it again.
Sliding down the shingle banks became a game until we then spotted a slipway and engaged in a spot of wave chasing before heading up the Prom towards the Pier.
It was fairly early in the morning, so it was a nice quiet stroll along the prom. We headed into Bognor high street on a mission to find some nappies for Eliza before returning back to our Butlins base.
The little ones seemed obsessed with rolling stones down a notice all about the history of Bognor Seafront and it took ages to move them away, whilst Sebastian decided that all the sea air had made him very sleepy and a snooze was the only option!
I still prefer the sand of our local beaches but shingle is fun too!
I used to be very disappointed if we went to a beach with lots of stones as well when I was younger so I know where they’re coming from!
I always think shingle beaches are loads more interesting but my kids always think it’s not a proper beach without sand!
Looks like you all had a lovely time. I’ve visited Bognor a couple of years ago. I thought with Butlin being there it would be a big town but was surprised at how little it was.
I remember taking my son to Butlins when he was around 3, and we walked to the beach – was most disappointed to find it to be shingle and not sand!! But you can find some fab stones on beaches like this!
I much prefer a sandy beach but it’s not a deal breaker, I just want to live by the seaside!

Ours prefer a sandy beach- but the temptation of skimming stones definitely takes away the initial misgivings.
Well done for exploring beyond Butlin’s- we never managed it due to the lure of the ladybirds!
Oh Kara it looks fabulous there, I can’t wait to go. We arrive on the 25th April so not long to wait now! You must have felt right at home there – I hope you got to skim lots of stones 🙂
I would love to live nearer the sea. I think a sandy beach is better, but all beaches are good x
What a brilliant trip out. It’s so true, sand beaches are lovely and great for castles and between the toes but stone beaches definitely have their benefits too. I haven’t been to Bognor before but it looks like a lovely seaside town…will have to add it to the list! 🙂

I like sand too, but we have a beach near us that is shingle and big cobbles, its a different kind of fun, hurling and skimming the stones, though my daughters aim when little, meant people hurtled for cover.
I live by the sea as well it is great isn’t it. Our beach is like Bognor’s all shingle, you do get used to it. Instead of building sandcastles we make stone castles.
I’m all for a sandy beach too but it’s a lot less messy (and the sandwiches are more pleasant!) on a stony beach. Looks like you all had a fab time 🙂

Emmy was also cross there were stones and no sand. Although we couldn’t stay long as it was raining
Stony beaches are so much easier to visit but sand is good fun. Looks like a beautiful beach.
