How To Maximise A Small Kitchen

Having a small kitchen can be challenging but that is not to say it can not be functional or that a good design and storage solutions cannot make the most out of a small kitchen. If you have a small kitchen then follow some of these tips to maximise the space you have.

Integrate everything

Integrating appliances can be a lifesaver, or more importantly, a space savour in your kitchen. Wherever it is possible try to integrate as many appliances as you can. Fridges, dishwashers, and washing machines all lend themselves to being neatly integrated into your kitchen cupboards. If you are choosing to install a dishwasher in a small space then consider opting for a slimline single dishwasher as these take up considerably less room than full-sized double dishwashers.  Integration doesn’t have to stop with appliances, get creative with your integration. You can integrate chopping boards, bins or dish drawers.

Think about the finish

When choosing your kitchen cupboards and design there are options you can choose that will help open up a space and make it feel bigger and brighter. Handleless doors create a sleek and uncluttered look. A gloss finish will help reflect light and keep the room feeling bright and give the impression that it is larger than it is.

Opting for a neutral colour palette will also help to ensure that the room feels larger than it is but if you really want to add the darker tones be sure to balance it out with light flooring or white walls.

Choose your doors wisely.

If your kitchen includes patio doors opting for sliding doors will save you space and give you the opportunity to add lots of natural light. They are the go-to choice when space is a premium. There are however different types of sliding doors all of which require specialist installation so make sure you are clued up on what to know before buying sliding doors.

Slide in a tiny table

If you dream of having an island or breakfast bar for the family to gather around but simply don’t have the space then try slotting in a small two-seater table. If you really want to optimise the space available then choose a fold-down or fold away table that can be put away when not in use.

Use inner door storage

A great way to really make the most of your storage space is to install storage racks on the inside doors of your kitchen cupboards. They can be used to store lids, chopping boards or hang utensils. Think outside the box and captilise on every inch of storage you have.

Use hanging space

Use your backsplash or spare wall space to hang items you cannot fit in cupboards, utensils, pots, pans or even mugs.

Store around storage

Yep, you may have open space above or below your refrigerator or above your kitchen cupboards, make the most of this space and use it for storage. In order to avoid it looking cluttered and messy purchase some en trend baskets or boxes to store all your items in.
