How to choose the right mattress for you

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to staying happy and healthy and is just as important as a good diet and exercise.

Things to consider to get the perfect environment for sleep are ensuring that the temperature is cool, noise is limited, black-out blinds or curtains are used to filter any external light and that you have a good quality bed and mattress for the maximum comfort.

The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7-10 years, depending on comfort and support, but finding the right mattress can be tricky.

How firm your mattress is can affect how well you sleep, but it really does does depend on individual taste; Side sleepers or those who change positions during the night are best suited to soft mattresses, whereas people who sleep on their back may require extra lower-back support provided by a firmer mattress.

You can find comfortable beds for an affordable price at the Sleep Station, who not only deliver your new bed or mattress to your door, but take the old one away too.

What type of mattress to choose

Bed-in-a-box

The first time I saw a bed-in-a-box, I was really surprised by how small it was – the mattress literally came compressed in a small box!

Bruno Mattress

As soon as you remove the mattress from the box, it miraculously grows to its normal size almost instantly, although it is recommended that you leave it a couple of hours before trying to sleep on. These mattresses are usually made from foam or a hybrid between memory foam and springs.

Memory foam mattress

Memory foam is a mouldable, hypo-allergenic material that is able to respond to temperature and weight, allowing it to mould to the shape of your body, absorb your weight and relieve pressure on your joints. It is not for everyone though, as it can give you a sinking motion as you settle to sleep.

Pocket spring mattress

Pocket spring mattresses are made from individual, small springs housed in their own pocket of fabric. This means each spring moves independently, providing individual support if you’re looking for a bed for two people. These mattresses are also more breathable than memory foam or latex mattresses as air will flow through them, so are great if you get hot when you are sleeping.

Open spring mattress

Cheaper and less supportive than a pocket spring mattress, an open spring mattress contains one long piece of metal wire coiled into numerous springs. These mattresses are best suited for children’s or guest beds.

Latex mattress

These mattresses are filled with latex foam, which is especially breathable and durable and is a great option for those with allergies or asthma.

Hybrid mattress

A hybrid mattress is built using a combination of materials that usually include memory foam, latex and pocket springs which gives you the best of both worlds and therefore a more balanced sleeping experience.

Bedding Matters

Choosing the right bedding is also important and back in 2015, we were converted to using wool bedding which is scientifically proven to improve sleep quality.

The Wool Room

The best thing about our wool duvet is that it is soft and durable and wool has a built-in natural climate control, so you can use the duvet all year round, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer!

My only other wish that would potentially make me sleep better is to have fresh, line-dried bedding everyday, but sadly that is not a possibility, especially in this country!!
