You don’t need to live right on the water’s edge to have fun at the beach!
We were invited to review the Beach Book, which is all about finding wild places at the seaside, as well as by lakes and rivers and making the most of opportunities to explore and enjoy all these places have to offer.
The book gives plenty of ideas of fun activities to keep the kids, and adults entertained.
I gave the kids the book to look through and they decided that they wanted to try discovering beach wildlife, which can be done by rock pooling, crabbing or fishing.
We opted for crabbing as we have some fabulous sites locally, including Mudeford Quay, Poole Quay and Swanage.
We have been crabbing before and used cat food as bait, but this time we opted for another suggestion, bacon. We used crab drop nets, which are much easier than traditional crab lines, as you don’t drop the crabs as you lift them out of the water.
It also mean’t that we also caught some shrimp too.
The kids were over-the-moon with their catch and we ended up with 8 crabs, which we separated into different buckets so they were not overcrowded and let go once we had finished.
The book also recommends exploring sand dunes and beach combing and using natural resources to play and invent new games (e.g., stone Jenga and skittles, ball runs and boules or funny face games or being creative by making nature art, using driftwood, shells, seaweed etc.
For those who don’t live near the coast, it also encourages you to make the most of lakes and rivers by foraging, damming and diverting streams and boat racing.
The team behind the Beach Book have launched their own shop, shoppompom.com, selling imaginative, design-led plastic free designs for children. They partner with the Marine Conservation Society and donate a percentage of their profits to their important work protecting our seas, shores and wildlife from plastic pollution.
The fabulous team behind The Beach Book are giving away a copy of their book and a set of ‘Coastal Animals’ stacking set by Thread Bear Design.
