Finally – New Carpets!

When referring to our house I often mention that we bought it as a “doer-upper” – 10 years in and we are still doing it up, but we are getting there.

We still desperately want to replace our internal doors, but other than that we are almost done, with the last room of the house finally having new carpets last week.

We have been tackling rooms one by one as I didn’t realise when we bought our house how much things would cost.  Looking back I can see benefits in renting as you don’t get the maintenance costs, but I do feel so much more secure knowing that we own our home.

The big expenses were the new kitchen, bathroom and windows but nothing really comes cheap these days.  When I decided to become a childminder we decided to change the ancient carpet downstairs.  I looked into wooden flooring from Posh Flooring and laminate before I settled on vinyl – yes vinyl for the lounge, dining room and hall.  It looks like wood but has the benefit of not getting scratched by toys, is brilliant for cleaning up spills and is soft for any falls.

Soon after I replaced the stairs and landing carpet with a cream carpet that I had seen done on one of the TV shows……..big mistake!!  It looked old almost immediately and I have hated it ever since, but I had to live with that decision.

Eliza had laminate in her room, which was there when we moved in, and I would never have it upstairs again – it is so noisy, so her room and the both room were next and we had a lovely stripey carpet laid last year.  Replacing the carpet and underlay has made such a difference to their rooms that I have been itching to do ours ever since and finally it has been done!

Sadly, the same stripey carpet I used for their rooms has been discontinued but I did find a similar one.  My carpet fitter was amazing and after moaning about our stair and landing carpet he advised me that he could do the landing and stairs with the off cuts from the bedroom!

Not only have I got rid of the ugly pink carpet in our bedroom, but I now have gorgeous carpet on the stairs and landing too.  It is surprising how something so trivial lifts the mood………now for the doors!
