Creating the perfect children’s bedroom

A child’s bedroom is not just a place for them to sleep.

It is the one room in the house that can really reflect their personality and is their sanctuary from the challenges of outside world as they get older.

When decorating their room it is tempting to go for a theme, however, from personal experience, their tastes and preferences change all too quickly and what was cool six months ago, may not be now.

The main thing to think about when designing their bedrooms is that it needs to be a flexible space which will accommodate their changing needs. High cost items such as beds, wardrobes and chests of drawers need stand the test of time, so it is worth investing in good quality items from the start.

The Bed

It is tempting to go for a high sleeper, cabin style bed when the kids are little, but as they grow I find that a traditional single bed or low cabin bed stands the test of time better as it can be easily transformed into something more grown up by adding cushions to turn it into a sofa, or a new headboard to change its look.

Check out the range of low sleeper cabin beds from Children’s Bed Shop for some inspirational ideas.

The Decor

When it comes to colour, painted walls have the advantage of being relatively quick and easy to update in future. Choose a satin paint that can withstand gentle sponging to get off any light marks. You can then accessorise with wall stickers, a feature gallery wall or posters which are easy to remove as and when your child’s taste changes.

Light colours can make the room feel bigger, whilst dark colours could take more time and effort to change, so if your child wants bright and bold colours, add funky curtains, lampshades, rugs and soft furnishings.

Bedroom

The Flooring

I am a big fan of carpet in children’s rooms as it is warm and comfortable underfoot and perfect for sitting on. It cushions falls and is forgiving when items are dropped on it, providing effective noise insulation, even when kids are playing. Consider choosing one that is dirt and stain resistant so is more likely to stand the test of time.

Themed Rooms

All kids go through a period of time loving a theme. For Eliza last year it was unicorns, but she has now moved on to Harry Potter, so bring your child’s favourite designs and colours alive through bedlinen and accessories that can cheaply and easily be changed.

Add Clever Storage

Kids come with a lot of stuff, so consider fitting as much storage into the space as you can. Multi-functional furniture is key; beds that come with built-in storage, practical shelving, essential for storing books, collectibles and LEGO models and drawers that can be converted in a desk for that busy teen doing their homework. A mixture of open and closed storage is best and baskets can make a pretty way of easily storing and changing toys.

How have you decorated your child’s room?
