Creating a playroom for the children

Making a space that is just for your children can give them an area that allows them to explore their creativity and help keep kid-friendly items in a place separate from the main living areas. A playroom can provide a flexible space that is dedicated to your kids as their interests change over time. It is also a place that does not have to be perfectly clean and tidy to serve as a room for adult guests. As a parent, your interior design choices in relation to your family can keep your home stylish and tidy. Here are a few tips to creating a children’s playroom that allows a great space for kids that the whole family will appreciate.

Plan your play layout

Once you have a room that you are ready to dedicate to family-friendly playtime, determine which large items you own or plan to own in the future so you can determine where to place them in the playroom. If your kids are young, then they might need lots of open floor space to crawl and walk without falling into furniture. Keep in mind that you can easily fill the floor space later as they grow. Older children might want a reading nook, a table and chairs to play board games, television with gaming consoles, or other specialty areas based on their interests.

Set up the seating

For kids of any age, seating is a must in the playroom. If they are very small, your kids might simply need a small table with chairs, and a soft rug or floor mat. For teenagers with loads of friends, consider planning space for a couch and gamer rocking chairs or beanbag chairs so they can all gather around to play the latest video game or watch a movie.

Choose a colour scheme

Children’s items are often made in primary colours, so it is easy to design a room that is red, yellow and blue. Remember that your colour choice does not have to match the toy collection and you will want this room to suit your children as they grow. Consider choosing one main colour and perhaps add hints of a second colour to the room. For example, you might choose curtains and a floor mat that are primarily blue and include decorative artwork that includes blue and orange. Keeping walls a neutral paint colour might save the work of changing it a few years later, once you and your family outgrow the initial wall colour.

Add personal touches with family photos and age-appropriate artwork. Bright colours are best used on pillows, affordable seating, cushions and toys. Don’t forget that some toys can be used for decoration.

Lighting the playroom

Light is essential in the design of any room, and safe lighting is especially important here. Heavy lamps on top of shelving are likely to get knocked off, so they should be avoided. Floor lamps can even pose dangers to young children, since they might be curious and unplug the lamp, which leaves an outlet exposed. Consider limiting installed lighting to overhead lighting paired with natural lighting, since natural light does not involve the hassle and dangers of lamp cords.

Bring natural light into the playroom by installing shutters. Full-height shutters are ideal in the playroom since they allow you to adjust the amount of light in the room throughout the day. If you have young children who might enjoy nap time lying on the playroom mat, the shutters can be closed to block outdoor light until playtime resumes. Teenagers will also appreciate adjustable shutters, since they reduce glare from light reflecting on the screen that they might be using. Either way, you will love being able to close the shutters for privacy at night and open them for plenty of natural light during the day.

Storage keeps the playroom tidy

Create storage areas that can be used for all ages. A bookcase can be used for books, toys and games for all ages. Built-in shelving is great in this room, but for any freestanding furniture, you should anchor it to the wall to avoid any risk of it tipping over, especially with small children in your home.

Toy bins can store frequently used, medium-sized items that don’t fit well on shelving. There are many alternatives to traditional toy bins for a stylish playroom. Consider using a storage ottoman or cushioned storage bench with a safe hinge that won’t pinch small children’s fingers when opening and closing.

Playroom

The playroom can be a fun place for kids to let their imagination run wild. It can be a space where everything has its place, but also a place to make a mess. Design the playroom to fit your kids’ interests and allow for change as they grow for a truly fun and flexible room.
