Are you looking after yourself?

Being a busy mum means putting your little ones first and as parents we learn to put our child’s needs before our own.  Being a parent is immensely rewarding, but sometimes we need to take a moment to think about our own health, and whether we’re helping or hindering our personal fitness and wellbeing. That goes for our mental health too!

Here we’ll look at ways you can give your overall health a little boost, improve your mood and give yourself a health MOT.

Regular health checks

Be honest. When was the last time you visited the dentist? Most of us go every six months or so, but many of us don’t, simply because we’re not suffering from toothache or discomfort. But did you know that visiting the dentist is a preventative measure? Having your oral health checked is a way of keeping dental problems at bay and prevents them from turning into something more serious. So whether you’re looking for dental care in Weybridge or crowns in Cornwall, get yourself booked in!

Head to your local GP and give yourself a health MOT. It’s so important for any minor issues to be flagged up as soon as possible, that way they can be treated before they get worse and therefore you’ll get a better outcome. At a GP check you can expect your Dr to check your height and weight, your blood pressure and pulse rate, perhaps even a ECG to monitor your heart. All these things will give you’re a better understanding of your health and will help you to make changes to your lifestyle if needed.

You should also head to your optometrist or local opticians for an eye test at least every two years.

Your lifestyle

It’s easy to enjoy life and still be healthy. It’s also pretty easy to achieve, once you have the right balance. In order to maintain happy and healthy mental health and physical health you should be doing the following:

  • Eating a little bit of everything in moderation and drinking plenty of water! Being healthy doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself, just remember that is it just that: a treat!
  • Keeping physically active in your everyday life. That means taking the stairs or pushing the pram up that hill instead of parking at the top!
  • Sleeping well. Not an easy feat when you have a little one but try to get as much rest as possible.
  • Managing your stress levels. It’s easy to let stress get the better of us in the hectic lives we lead. Just remember to pause, take a breath and a few moments to contemplate the situation. Then you’ll be ready to try again.
  • Keeping in touch with others. Loneliness is something that can plague new mums no matter what their age. Isolation is more common amongst adults then you might think, try to place some “keeping in touch days” in your schedule. Meet a friend for coffee or invite them over instead. Don’t worry if you haven’t vacuumed in a while – they won’t even notice!
