More than just a muggle: enjoying Harry Potter as an adult

Harry Potter has been in our lives for over two decades yet, for some, it is still as enjoyable as the first time they opened the pages and were transported to Hogwarts. While you may now be far too old to receive your Hogwarts letter, that doesn’t mean you need to leave your love of the franchise in the past. There may be several ways that the adult Harry Potter fan can still enjoy the series, both officially and via other channels.

Visiting the studios

The original movies were filmed in the UK, meaning you may not need to travel too far to see some of the sets and props. You may be able to take tours around different parts of the movies and see the costumes that the actors wore close up. If you are on a budget, you may want to see if you can get discounted Harry Potter World tickets for yourself and your friends or family. While this may be an enjoyable experience for those with children who may, themselves, now be getting into the stories, it can be just as much fun for adult-only parties who want to relive the magic of their youth. You may even get to try butterbeer and take home some souvenirs that Ronald Weasley might class as brilliant!

Take a potions class

While, sadly, you may never be able to sit in Potions alongside the Slytherins and learn from Professor Snape, you may be able to recreate the same effect in some of the wizarding cocktail bars that exist around the country. Thanks to science, rather than magic, this could allow you to create some delicious drinks that look like they have been made in a Hogwarts cauldron, smoke effects included. This experience would certainly only be suitable for adults, due to the inclusion of alcohol. This may make for a great birthday treat, a hen or stag party, or simply an afternoon or evening out with friends. You may even want to dress up to make it feel more authentic.

Read further into the fandom

Although you may love the original books, referred to as canon, some fans may have been unhappy with how things ended, or even had their own ideas. You may be aware that some well-known authors, such as E. L. James, or Cassandra Clare, originally wrote fanfiction, but there may also be more obscure stories that started life as a rewrite of Harry Potter. One that adult fans may enjoy could be Cruel and Beautiful World, originally posted by the penname Lena Phoria. Now, you may be able to find the story, rewritten as an original novel, by L. Stoddard Hancock, available as a Paperback or on the Kindle. Online, you could also use sites such as fanfiction.net or archiveofourown.org to find other stories that have the themes you’re looking for.

Harry Potter isn’t just for children. Whether old or young, pureblood or muggleborn, you may still be able to enjoy the delights of the wizarding world.
