Is there anything more British than the good old-fashioned milkman?
One of my most prominent childhood memories is dashing to the front door to collect our milk delivery in the morning and the satisfaction of pushing the foil top in to open it……..we even used to collect those foil tops for charity or crafting!
You can just imagine my excitement when we were asked to review milk&more.
Part of the Dairy Crest group, milk&more is your same friendly local milkmen – now online. In addition to fresh milk and everything dairy, they offer a huge and ever-expanding range of essentials to over 1.4 million homes all over the UK. From bread and milk to the freshest seasonal fruit and vegetable boxes, they’ve got daily essentials covered in one easy-to-manage online service.
Signing up is easy – simply pop in your postcode to check they deliver in your area and fill in the online form. Payment is made by direct debit so there is no worrying about leaving cash or a cheque out for the milkman to collect.
milk&more deliver up to 6 days a week, however mine delivers Monday, Wednesday and Friday which is perfect for us. I have set up a permanent order for a 2pt Milk Bag and a bottle of Orange juice on those delivery days. If I need to add anything else to the order I have until 9pm the night before to add it.
I was really pleased to see the milk bags on there as I bought a Jug It at my local supermarket and then they withdrew them within a month, plus I still get the satisfaction of pushing the foil lid down though as I get bottles of Orange Juice.
With over 250 extra items available I can add items like bread, cheese, eggs, bacon, chocolate and even wine to my order. I have to admit with my first order we had a small issue – the local wildlife decided to try and destroy and eat my loaf of bread. To stop this happening I now leave a box outside for the milkman to pop my shopping inside. It always comes well wrapped in carrier bags to ensure it stays dry too.
They do have some fantastic offers on which rival local supermarkets and delivery is free, however it does work out slightly more expensive, but that is what you get for having shopping delivered direct to your door which is ready and waiting for you first thing in the morning. I am normally up with the baby between 5am and 6am and it is always here when I get up!
The Milkman has been an essential part of British life for generations, and now that they’re online, you can discover how quickly they’ll become an essential part of your life, too.
Disclosure: I was given a £50 credit in my milk&more account to review their services
What great idea, I remember the foil on the top. Not sure if you are old enough but I can also remember when we had a spate of Blue Tits breaking through the foil tops and drinking the cream, even made it on to the news xx
When my son was 3/4/5 we used to have a milkman! He would accept the milk tokens that I was given because I was on benefits, and as a single mum, it helped to have that milk delivered to my door step!
I do still see a milk float (selling more than milk these days) around my area, it’s just such a lovely bygone tradition, and I think it’s important we hold onto things like that!
I’d completely forgotten about collecting the milk tops for charity! I remember taking them into school 🙂
We use Milk and More, works brilliantly for us 🙂
The slight extra cost is worth the convenience I think. I’d love a milkman but when we ordered from our local chap he failed to turn up. We will have to give milk and more a go instead.
I haven’t seen a milkman around here for years
I remember I used to love the cream off the top of the full fat milk that our milkman used to bring. Mmmmmmmmm x
I remember the Milkman delivering to our house when I was a kid. You don’t really see them around now so this isn’t something I had considered! Worth looking into!
My BIL was a milk man!
I remember the milkman delivering milk and I SO miss that…I would love to see a proper return of the milk vans. Such a great thing to support.
I have been really intrigued by Milk & More but assumed it would be a lot more expensive. With delivery being free it might be worth checking out as I am spending £5 a week on delivery alone!
My dad used to be a milkman, he gave up about six years ago. I remember going to help on a Saturday or in the holidays as a teenager as a ‘runner’. Its an incredibly hard and very physical job!
Lovely post Kara. We use Milk & More here, nothing better than milk to the doorstep 🙂
I haven’t heard a milk float in the early morning for a long time, a real shame. It makes me very nostalgic.
Fantastic. i used to love the local morning milk delivery. I’m going to have a peep to see if they do it in my area.
Ahh lovely! And kind of nostalgic. We used to get a milk delivery when I was a child, sometimes Mum would get us chocolate flavour. HOW EPIC!
I wish we still had a milkman, sounds great x
I would love to have a milkman, my nanna and grandad had one and we used to get milk and OJ. To be honest Milk is the one thing I always forget to buy at the shops so having it waiting for me at the front door would be ideal for us. x
They offer a great service for all those forgotten essentials!
I remember the milkman coming when I was at my mum and dads , good you have kept up with it .x
WHAT a great idea !
Aaah, I remember the rattle of bottles on the milk float (showing my age)!
Do they still do gold top? 😉
I used to love when we had a milkman because the milk was fresh and we got so many other goodies from him. Would be interested in trying a service like this out!
It’s really interesting that they deliver bags of milk to keep the weight and volume down and save costs. I would be tempted to get a delivery just for the orange juice bottle tops. I can’t believe the delivery is there for you when you get up with the baby, that is pretty amazing service.
We love Milk and More! We used to get last minute bits and bobs, like bread, etc. too. Very useful!
Aww they don’t deliver to our area 🙁 I have very fond memories of our milkmen (it was a father and son), they were lovely and always had time to have a chat with us kids 🙂
Been a while since I had a milkman come round with a bottle of milk. Need to look into this a bit more.
I have been thinking recently about signing up with the milk man as we are always running out of milk. I see him drive around my area 🙂 x
Will have to have a look in our area as living without a shop I do tend to run out of milk in the mornings!
I would love to have a milkman… I hate when I run out of milk for my morning coffee
I literally don’t know how I’d cope without grocery delivery but we always run out of milk. I’ll see if this service is available in our area.
