Ditch the screens: the benefits of traditional games

Whether it is a television, a tablet or a smartphone, it’s without a doubt that our kids always have entertainment at hand and, with so many options in one small screen, it’s understandable that traditional games have a harder time competing for our children’s attention.

Let me put all my cards on the table. I don’t believe that screen time is a negative thing, it can offer wonderful interactive ways to teach and entertain our children but traditional games (that don’t involve computer screens), such as card games, board games and table games, also have a lot to offer.

As this article about the best traditional games for children on Lingo Kids mentions, “it’s great that children have fun with new technologies, but they should also find enjoyment with their parents and in the street, with their friends, playing classic games that have entertained so many previous generations.”

Traditional games will stimulate your children’s intellectual and physical growth by requiring physical activity, social skills, creativity, critical thinking and more. What’s really not to like?

  • Card games

From Go Fish to Rummy and Snap, there is an endless variety of card games that you can play with your kids with a simple deck of cards. Plus, there are many other card games that you can enjoy with other card decks, including UNO (a staple in my family!).

  • Board games

There are tabletop games for every age, so you will be spoilt for choice. Anything from chess to Monopoly is included in the wide world of board games, so simply choose one and let the games begin. However, if you are looking for an extensive selection of board games, check out Meeples Corner. They offer a variety of games that cater to all interests and age groups, ensuring hours of fun for the whole family.

  • Classic games

Don’t let the name “classic” fool you or make you think that you won’t have a good time. Classic games, such as dominoes, snakes and ladders, Connect4, and scrabble, were a big part of my childhood and always proved to be fun and exciting games to play with the whole family.
