“Ours is not a circus, it’s a berserkus!” reads the programme!
On Wednesday, we were invited to review Cirque Berserk during its visit to Brighton on its UK tour.
Set on the lawns next to the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove and a stone’s throw from the shingle beach, Cirque Berserk combines centuries old skills and traditions, alongside a contemporary approach and modern staging.
The show begins with the Timbuktu Tumblers, who burst onto the stage with a brilliant skipping routine, a series of impressive flips and tumbles before showing their balancing skills with human pyramids.
Drum beats accompany the entrance of the Bolas Argentinas who are soon impressing the audience with a stunning routine with their Bolas.
The humour of the show comes from Paulo Dos Santos, a real showman who had the audience in stitches with his attempts to retrieve his coat from the circus top.
As you would expect from a circus, there are also some very impressive aerial displays, all performed without any safety net or harnesses which drew lots of gasps from the audience.
The changes between the acts was seamless and the acts ranged from high energy, to calm and serene.
The first half of the show lasts for an hour, with a 20 minute interval where you can treat yourself to popcorn and candyfloss, or get a picture with the Lucius Team, who perform on motorbikes in the Globe of Death.
The second half was perhaps even more daring than the first with knife throwing, foot juggling and more acrobatics.
One of the most impressive acts for me was Four Hands & Two Wheels who are incredible acrobats who perform hand-to-hand tricks with incredible balance, despite one of them being wheelchair bound.
The kids favourite act of the day had to be the Revolution Troop with their human catapult, that literally flung one of them into the air for the team to catch.
The Timbuktu Tumblers were back on stage with an impressive limbo dance routine.
Paulo Dos Santos was also back to entertain the crowd and blew some impressive smoke rings into the audience.
He also showed some impressive acrobatic skills with an amazing aerial routine.
The show finale is the Globe of Death’, in which five motorcyclists defy gravity and risk life and limb traversing the inside of a spherical steel cage at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

The circus sounds like really good fun. The acrobats must have been amazing to watch. We haven’t been to the circus in ages.
I can’t remember ever going to the circus when I was a kid, but I went to see Cirque du Soleil in Orlando a few years ago and loved it! I’m always in awe of the people who perform in circuses, especially the acrobats.
Sounds like a wonderful circus with so much going on and plenty of varied entertainment. I’m always amazed at the acrobatic displays.
I haven’t been to a circus in ages. My Mom loves them. For the ones I’ve been to I have always been amazed by the performer’s sense of balance.
We’ve heard great thinks about Cirque Berserk and the motorcycles would be thrilling to watch! I bet it was jaw-dropping!

Oh my goodness I bet this was amazing to see live! There is something amazing about how people can do all these things with their bodies and I love seeing stunts on bikes and the like.

This sounds like a great circus. I love the fact that these acrobats and artists use something other than animals to thrill and entertain the audience. My son is motorbike mad so I know he’d love the final act!
