How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World Review

Taking the kids to the cinema is a real treat and I have to admit that we tend to go during the kids clubs showings as it is cheaper, however, there has been one film on their radar that they wanted to see as soon as it launched, How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World.

Following on from the previous two films, Hiccup has fulfilled his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia in Berk and keeps busy by rescuing captive dragons from poachers with his hapless friends and trusty sidekick, Toothless.

That is until the poachers take offence at losing all their dragons and employ Grimmel to help them get them back. His one mission, however, is to kill every single Night Fury, which in turn forces an exodus from Berk until Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away.

Toothless’ clumsy courtship dance had to be one of the funniest parts of the film and the high-flying sequence through the clouds is simply beautiful, but nothing prepares you for the entrance to Caldera – a breathtaking hidden dragon world which showcases every dragons unique markings.

When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.

It is a brilliant film and I have to say that I enjoyed it as much as the kids – make sure you take some tissues for the end.

Another thing seeing the film has done has made them want to read the books and reenact their favourite moments from the film.

There are a brilliant new range of How to Train Your Dragon toys available to support the film and we were sent a selection to review.

Dreamworks Dragons Fire Breathing Toothless

Measuring over 50cm long with 55cm, pull-open wings, Giant Fire Breathing Toothless, RRP: £34.99, is loaded with exciting battle features and amazing, fire breathing effects.

He requires 3 x AAA batteries to work, which are not included, and then simply fill the pack on his back with water using the dropper included.

Toothless also comes with a spare water tank and two missiles which fit in his mouth.

Toothless Water Set

To make Toothless light up and produce smoke-like puffs of dragon’s breath push the button behind his left ear.

Load a glow-in-the-dark plasma blast projectile into his mouth and push the button behind his right ear to fire!

Toothless is not only ready to strike but looks striking with shimmery, metallic blue bioluminescent colouring from head to tailfins—just like the movie character and the kids all agree he is awesome!

My only feedback is that Giant Fire Breathing Toothless is better for older children as he can be quite tricky to carry and operate for smaller hands.

Astrid and Stormfly

Hiccup would be nothing without trusty Astrid by his side and her striking dragon, Stormfly.

With an RRP of £14.99, the Astrid figure is suited up with dragon scale armour and wields a removable double-bladed axe. Her loyal dragon, Stormfly, is ready to swoop and attack.

Stormfly and Astrid

Load the dragon blast projectile into Stormfly’s mouth and pull back her left leg to fire!

Dreamwork Dragons Deluxe Dragon – Toothless

The Toothless Deluxe Dragon, RRP: £19.99, has poseable legs, glowing lights and ferocious roaring sounds that bring him to life.

Hiccup’s dragon is ready to soar—just push the button on his back to pop open bioluminescent fabric wings and activate lights and sounds.

Toothless has detailed sculpting and looks just like the movie character.

Look for Lightfury and Stormfly Deluxe Dragons to add to your collection at Smyths Toy Store, each sold separately, and grow your dragon team and swoop into battle!
