For those of you that follow my blog, you will know that Sebby is struggling with his speech and we have been referred to get him assessed. Personally I think it is more a case of he cannot get a word in edgeways in our household so I am keen to get him talking more, especially when his siblings are at school.
I was chatting to Liska from New Mum Online and she recommended I get the Shopping List Game from Orchard Toys to help bring on Sebby’s vocabulary as this award winning game encourages memory and literacy skills.
The game itself is suitable for 2 to 4 players, who each take a trolley or a basket that they must fill along with one of four shopping lists. All the items are made from a sturdy, wipe-clean board, which means that the game will withstand constant playing, and the colourful illustrations allow the game to be played by young children with no reading ability.
To play, turn over one of the 32 cards showing familiar, everyday items from the supermarket, such as eggs, tomatoes, washing powder and aubergines, and if they are on your list, you can pop them in your trolley. The winner is the first player to collect all the items on their list and fill their trolley.
As Sebby is only 2, we play it slightly differently at the moment. Sebastian is learning to recognise the grocery products and I encourage him to find the item on the list and repeat its name as we do so. Some things are easier than others but I have noticed a huge improvement in his speech already as it is a game we play almost daily.
The game can promote plenty of discussion, not only whilst he is playing, but also on a shopping trip to a real supermarket – Sebastian can see how many items from the game he can see on the shelves.
The game can be supplemented with one or both of the booster packs (‘fruit and veg’ or ‘clothes’) to increase the number of players and/or the number of items to buy.
We are all enjoying the game. Isaac and Eliza play it the correct way and Sebby’s vocabulary is growing daily, although sometimes it is only Mummy who knows what he is saying!!

We had this game when mine were Sebby’s age and they loved it too! I’m glad that his speech is coming along well – it can only improve with more game play!

Kara, Emma never made much sense in her speech either until she turned 2 and then it was like a switch was turned on! I wouldn’t worry too much and I think you are doing great in playing vocabulary games and encouraging speech with Seb!xx

Games are such fun especially when they bring the family together, we have quite a few Orchard games and they are still favourites!
I hope it proves helpful for Sebby Kara. We love Orchard Toys and we have this game, it’s brilliant. We played it before POD was old enough although she’s recently started playing it properly and loves it! Such fun 🙂
