Review: Dorset Sunflower Trail 2024

We last payed a visit to Dorset Sunflower Trail back in 2021 and loved it.

We planned to go last year, but missed the short window of time that they open, so I was determined not to miss it this year.

Dorset Sunflower Trail opened on 9th August at Maiden Castle Farm in Dorchester, set in the shadow of the Iron Age Hill Fort – Maiden Castle.

The trail is bigger and better than I remember, with two trails shaped into the words farming and food, plus a butterfly shaped picnic area.

The kids were given postcards and pencils and encouraged to find the answers to the questions about the farm on them, which were dotted along the trails.

The farming trail is the longer of the two and takes around 40 minutes to complete. There is seating dotted around for those that need to stop and rest, or just take in the beauty of the sunflowers.

The second smaller food trail, is an accessible route for those with mobility requirements.

I would recommend at least 60 minutes to complete the trails, but expect to be there longer as they have a cafe on wheels serving tea, coffee and snacks, locally made ice cream and gifts to peruse.

Dorset Sunflower Trail is not a pick your own, however, they do sell freshly cut sunflower stems for just £1 each.

There are extra activities to enjoy this year, such as their Sundowner sessions where you can visit during golden hour, trail running, art in the sunflowers, pilates sessions and a photography competition.
