Short-term car insurance gives you temporary cover for driving a car. It can be a cheaper alternative to annual cover if you don’t need insurance for the full year.
This temporary cover can last anything from one hour to several months, depending on what you need it for, so you’ll only pay for the insurance cover for the amount of time you need it.
Why you might need short-term car insurance
Short-term car insurance can be used for a variety of reasons:
Borrowing someone else’s car
You car is off the road, but you still need to do the school run and get to work. Borrowing a friend or family members car can be a cheaper alternative to car hire in the short term.
New Car
Nothing beats the excitement of buying a new car, but if you still have your old car at home under your current insurance, you may need to get short-term insurance to enable you to drive your new car home and amend your current policy.
Occasional use of a vehicle you keep off the road
If like us you have a child at university, they often cannot take their car. To save money on insurance, we take the car off the road and when Kian is due home from university we start looking for monthly car insurance to cover him when he is home.
Or if you have a classic car you sometimes take for a spin but don’t use regularly.
Learning to Drive
Learning to drive can be expensive and it is recommended that you get practice outside of lessons where you can.
Short-term car insurance covers you for the lessons and practice sessions you do before getting your full licence.
The Airport Run
Travel is off the cards at the moment, but when it is back, transport to the airport can get expensive.
Getting a friend to drive you to the airport in your own car can save money on transport and parking, plus you can relax knowing the car is safe with a friend.
A returning UK resident
If you are an expat making a short visit back to the UK and you have access to your own vehicle on your visit, you will temporary cover whilst here.
