Growing up, I loved all the Herbie films and my very first car was a VW Beetle which I adored, spending hours lovingly polishing the chrome bumpers and making sure it looked its best.
The history of the VW Beetle and Campervan dates back to post-war Europe, when in 1948 Volkswagen developed a van version of the Beetle. Quite simply, the Beetle was known as the Type 1, and the van version became known as the Type 2 and their quirky looks won the hearts and minds of generations ever since.
Now the cult VW Beetle with its unmistakable shape has entered the cheerful PLAYMOBIL world, alongside the VW Campervan.
We were sent the classic VW Beetle to review, which includes a roof rack, ideal for a family trip to the beach.
It took around 5 minutes to assemble and comes with figures of a woman, man and child.
Accessories include the Volkswagen Beetle itself, roof rack, suitcase, cooler, surfboard, umbrella, towel, sand pile, sand castle, sand bucket, sand rake, sand shovel, umbrella cap and 3 bottles.
After removing the roof, the lovingly designed interior with beige seats, dashboard and steering wheel is revealed. On the back seat there is space for the child, as well as a cool bag, sand toys and towel.
Suitcase and surfboard can be strapped to the roof rack to keep it secure and the tailgate that can be opened, revealing the engine. The attention to detail is brilliant and like all Playmobil toys, is really well made and sturdy.
I think both sets are either perfect as kids toys, or collectibles for fans of the VW world. The Campervan has an RRP of £49.99 and the Beetle is £39.99 and available from all good toy shops.
