Do you like to write? Whether you have your own blog, you write for pleasure or you’re hoping to publish your very own novel one day there’s one thing that plagues every writer at some point in their career. Writer’s block.
It’s difficult to know what causes it, and it’s inherently frustrating. You want to get something written, but nothing flows, you have no ideas, you’re making endless mistakes and getting frustrated – you can relieve writing stress by checking for plagiarism here – and for others, the idea of a blank page no longer inspires them, it’s simply overwhelming! One comfort you can take from writer’s block is that it doesn’t last forever and luckily, there are some simple things you can do to help it pass as quickly as possible.
Read on to discover how you can relight your writing spark.
Eliminate distractions
You can’t expect your creativity to flow when your phone is constantly buzzing, your children are running around, and you have the TV blaring away. By eliminating as many distractions as possible, you’ll be able to think clearly and have better luck in hearing your own thoughts and putting them onto paper. If you find the urge to use the internet or check your social media accounts too strong, consider leaving your phone in another room or disable the internet on your laptop to remove temptation! Choose to write when the kids have gone to bed, or when they’re napping!
Listen to music
Music is a powerful, emotive tool that makes our imaginations come to life. Some writers find music a distraction, however, if you’re using it to help banish your writer’s block then it’s actually a useful creativity tool. Try some classical music or some jazz to get your creative juices flowing. Movie soundtracks are always strong melodic pieces that evoke all kinds of emotions – you’re sure to find one that matches your writing genre.
Accept it won’t be perfect
Sometimes we find it difficult to write because we’re worried it won’t be perfect or good enough. The truth is that no book or blog post is perfect on the first go. That’s why we edit! The sooner you accept that your first draft is exactly that – a draft – then you’ll be able to let your creativity loose once again and if you need to write a set number of words, use of a word counter will help keep track of the number of sentences and paragraphs.
Get your blood pumping
If you’re spinning around in your chair, pacing the floor and getting frustrated, then it’s time to get up and get moving. Getting your blood pumping is a great way to reset and refresh your creative mind. Hit the gym, go for a jog or take the dog for a brisk walk! Fresh air can also work wonders.
Read!
Sometimes, a quick fix just won’t cut it. So, to banish your writer’s block, try taking inspiration from the writers that you admire the most. The most successful writers read constantly and aren’t afraid to try something new. Head online to your local bookstore and pick up a genre that interests you or try something out of your comfort zone. Just keep reading!
