Top Tips on Surviving the Airport with Kids

It is no secret that we love to travel, however, airports can be stressful places and are probably the least favourite part of a holiday.

The thought of marshalling the kids through an airport used to bring me out in a cold sweat, but the more we have done it, the easier is has become.

Our top tips on surviving the airport with kids

Travelling to the airport

Travelling to the airport can be a frustrating, time-consuming and stressful experience, especially if there are traffic delays en-route. For early morning flights, we tend to book airport parking and accommodation locally, but if you are flying from your local airport, it is worth considering booking an airport transfer.

Airport transfers are pre-arranged transportation for travellers between your home and the airport or the airport and your final destination, whether it be a hotel, cruise port, or another local point of interest. Airport transfers aren’t just for businessmen, there are comfortable and convenient Manchester Airport transfers for families too.

Give yourself plenty of time

There is nothing worse than rushing around and it is always a recipe for forgetting something. We always arrive at least 2 hours before our flight, even when using a local airport.

Get your documents ready

Technology has made air travel so much easier, with handy apps where you can pre-book your seats, check-in online and store your boarding passes on your phone.

I am still that person that prints off my boarding passes just in case, and have a handy plastic folder than I keep all our passports and travel documents in, so have them to hand at all times.

Make it an adventure

Getting through security is a challenge, especially if you have a buggy in tow. Explain to the kids what is happening and pretend they will be excited that their teddy is going to have an X-Ray in a special machine.

Entertainment

Wherever you’re going, you’re going to need something to keep the little ones entertained along the way. Whilst you might not like your child to have a lot of screen time every day, long journeys are the place to make an exception to this rule. Packing a kid-friendly tablet and games can be the best way to prevent the cries of ‘Are we nearly there yet?’.

Travel-Games

Most larger airports also have kids play areas and these can be a great way to let your little ones blow off some steam and tire themselves out before boarding the plane.

Soft Play Stena Line

For older children, letting them choose a new book in the shop can also help stave off boredom both in the airport and on the plane.

Enjoy a tasty treat

Most airports are packed full of restaurant, perfect for families. If you are travelling short haul, airline food can be pricey, so take advantage of airport dining before heading to the gate. Don’t forget to pack some snacks for the plane and transfer the other side too!

  1. These are great tips! The worst part for us is the scanners. Brook and Indie get so upset about them and I’ve not figured out how to calm them down yet. Fortunately most staff are helpful and understanding

  2. Great tips! Traveling with kids can be difficult but there are plenty of ways to make the whole trip more comfortable. I always take a handful of games along to keep them busy and go for airport transfers, having the car booked and ready beforehand saves a lot of time, and how great is it if a chauffeur is there to take care of your luggage and guide you especially when its a new city you’re visiting. On my last trip to Amsterdam I booked chauffeurservicesholland.nl and that saved me from a lot of worries.
