What’s the future of bathroom design?

We had our bathroom replaced back in 2013, when I was heavily pregnant with Sebastian and already it is feeling out of date and I remember being so proud of my bluetooth mirror which could play music directly from our phones.

My husband works in the home improvement sector and he is forever coming home with tales of the latest technology for the home, making the bathroom of the future seem less of a dream and more of a reality.

What does the bathroom of the future look like?

With sustainability at the forefront of our minds these days, it is that, technology and good design that is key to bathroom innovation.

From reducing waste, by controlling the water flow rate on our taps and showers, introducing temperature control to prevent our water getting too hot and recycling water, there is a lot already being done to help reduce the impact we have on our planet.

Upcycling is also big business, with many homeowners using old antique wooden units for a bit of added “WOW” factor in the bathroom, as well as some handy storage.

Smart technology is already helping those with additional needs adjust the temperature of their water and open the shower door, can you imagine being able to ask Alexa to run the bath for you.

For those share a family bathroom with children and adults of different ages, a height-adjustable sink, toilet and mirror that moves up and down depending on who is using them, would be hugely beneficial too.

The latest kitchen technology sees fridge freezers being able to add items to a shopping list, I would love to be able to tell my shower to add more shampoo, toothpaste and other essentials to my shopping list when they are running low.

We have the Philips Hue lighting system in our home which allows us to adjust not only the brightness in our lightbulbs, but also their colour too. The latest technology will allow you to customise the temperature of the room, play mood music and even add soft underwater lighting to the bath to help improve your mood.

It’s important that bathroom designs adapt to the user’s needs, keeping accessibility and inclusivity at the heart of the design.
