My Cloud Home Review

Last weekend I introduced my readers to the My Cloud Home Family Album Project where I hope to reinvigorate the family album for the digital age.

As part of the project we were sent a Western Digital’s My Cloud Home, a personal cloud storage device which can help you to store, organise and curate your photos and videos, all in one place.

The words ‘cloud storage’ is enough to send me into a bit of a panic. It’s a running joke in this family that I don’t really do all the techy stuff as I tend to leave it to Hubby and the teen, but the My Cloud Home device is super easy to set up and use.

What you need

  1. My Cloud Home Device
  2. Internet Connected Router
  3. SmartPhone / Tablet / PC or MAC

Getting Started

To start, the My Cloud Home plugs directly into your Wi-FiTM router at home so you can save all your digital content in one central place.

After connecting your unit to your router and power, wait for 10 minutes to make sure the latest software is installed.

My Cloud Home Internet

Go to mycloud.com/hello on your Wi-Fi connected device and create an account and auto-discover your device.

You are now ready to go!

Setting up My Cloud Home

The beauty of the My Cloud Home device is you can automatically backup your photos and videos from your phone by selecting “Enable Auto Backup” from the My Cloud Home mobile app activity tab.

The My Cloud Home device also has a USB 3.0 port on the back of the device, so you can import images from camera’s, external hard drives or Memory sticks too. It is available in capacities 2TB – 8TB, and as well as automatically backing up the photos and videos on your phone, it can also wirelessly back up and sync all your PC, Mac computers and cloud accounts.

Benefits of using the My Cloud Home storage device

The My Cloud Home gives you on-the-go access by allowing you to upload and share from anywhere with an internet connection using My Cloud Home apps for mobile and desktop and via MyCloud.com.

It comes with a Family Folder which can be used to share files between the Device Owner and all Guest Users logged into the same My Cloud Home device. This is ideal for sharing photo’s from family events, or with family members who don’t live close by.

Invite family and friends to create individual accounts. Each invited person can set up their own private space that only they have access to on the device. They can manage, access and share their content as they want.

Quickly find photos, videos, movies and docs using easy-to-use search with the My Cloud Home mobile or desktop app, or on MyCloud.com.

Celebrate your memories and organise a #ScreeningSunday

My Cloud Home want to see families reinvigorating the family album and start celebrating memories together for the digital age, by showing how wonderful it can be to share pictures and videos as a family.

Why not set up a #ScreeningSunday; a moment in time, may be 20 minutes on Sunday afternoon, where you all gather together and look over your pictures as a family. It is surprising how many memories just looking at old photo’s brings up and it made us chuckle to see the little ones thinking old pictures of the older kids were them.

Do you make photo albums or look back at old photographs?

  1. My children love looking back at their baby photos! I have to admit that I leave all this kind of thing to my husband, I really haven’t a clue.

  2. My photos are allover the place. Sometimes I am at loss as to how to access them. I would really welcome a device to help with storage and organization. Western Digital’s My Cloud Home seems to be offering a good service but how is this different to an external drive or icloud for instance?

  3. My Cloud Home is such a brilliant concept and I’m so glad to have one at home. The fact that it’s there backing up all our digital content gives me so much peace of mind. Also love that I have the freedom to declutter my phone, and it’s so much easier to organise my photos 🙂

  4. I totally here you about the concept of cloud storage. I’ve tried and failed several times to set this up, but My Cloud Home has finally helped me to get there and now everything the family has is backed up

  6. Oh wow I never knew about this but sounds amazing, I have storage issues at the moment and really need to get another external hard drive but this would certainly be an option – thanks for sharing

  7. I love how quick and easy it seems to be so that anyone could get on with it. We have so many photo albums in my house and we actually happened to go through them at the weekend as the family came over for my sisters birthday

  8. As it happens I am always looking back at old photos but I desperately need to digitise them. The My Cloud Home will be my way of achieving this. We have held the one #ScreenigSunday and I think we will be holding more.
