Helping boost confidence with Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs

Like many parents of primary aged children, we have just had this terms parents evening.

Isaac and Eliza are doing brilliantly and the school are happy with their progress and Sebby is has settled in well.

Like many children in Reception, he is one of the youngest in the year and reading is proving to be a bit of a challenge. He loves watching alphablocks on the television and is starting to know some of the basic words in books, but he would much rather work out what is going on in the story using the pictures.

His teacher has been fabulous with him and has suggested a different approach to reading at home. Instead of sounding our each individual letter in a word; B-O-A-T, we now make the sounds; B-OA-T which seems to be helping, but there is more we can do to help.

Reading Eggs is a multi-award winning online learn to read programme for children aged 2–13. It has been used by over 10 million children and 12,000 schools worldwide.

Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs marries school and home reading perfectly and Sebby’s teacher is happy for us to use it alongside his book reading. We simply make a note in his reading record which one he has completed that day.

Like many children his age, Sebby loves technology and getting to use the iPad is considered a treat. Reading Eggs is a win/win for us, as he gets his iPad reward, yet I know it is helping him with his reading at the same time. You can also use it on Android and PC.

Reading Eggs uses the five pillars reading which all children need to become confident readers: phonics and phonemic awareness, sight words, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading for meaning, but it does this using thousands of interactive activities, motivating rewards and songs.

Reading Eggs

It has a helpful parents area so you can see how your child is doing, with features such as assessing his reading age, checking his phonics skills and if he knows his sight words (easy to read words that you find in everyday text).

For children that like to receive rewards, it celebrates every achievement with songs, fireworks or cheers and awards them certificates when they achieve a level. We have agreed that for every certificate Sebby earns, he gets a sticker on his reward chart.

Reading Eggs

It really surprised me how quickly he took to it and he got so excited by his progress that I had to stop Eliza and Isaac joining him and helping him with the answers. At the beginning of the program it does some basic tests with him to help asses his current level of knowledge and I was very proud that it assessed him at age 5, a few months ahead of his fifth birthday.

Reading Eggs

For older children like Eliza and Isaac, Reading Eggs builds on their knowledge and understanding by reading the e-book and answering the quiz that follows or using the dictionary to get detailed definitions so they understand the word meanings and how they are used.

I need to look into this. My 4 yo is quite hyperlexic, he knows he’s letters since 18 month old and no can read a few words too. All by himself. A program like this would gently encourage him to move a bit more forward with his skills.

We had a go at this…..I was the one who couldn’t get the hang of it and kept getting frustrated with it all…but it might be to do with the fact I was trying to do it on a phone…tiny screen and fiddly!
