2018 Flooring Trends

When it comes to decorating your home, every detail matters. It is important to get every element of a room right, including the flooring.

Every year brings new trends when it comes to home decor, and 2018 is no exception. So, if you are planning to replace one or more of your floors, read on to see what flooring materials you can expect to find in the shops.

New skirting

In the past, when people updated their flooring the most they usually did to their skirting was to clean or maybe repaint their skirting. Many people will still do this. But, as you can see here the cost of baseboards and skirting have fallen drastically. Plus, they are now available in a wider range of styles. There is a lot more focus on this element of flooring than there used to be. So, it is expected that more people will be ripping out their old skirting and installing something that fits in better with the overall style of each room.

Wood is still on-trend

Some were predicting that wood would no longer be on trend this year. While there is evidence that more people are buying carpet again, the British love affair with wooden flooring is definitely not over.

Wooden Flooring

Laminate wins out over natural wood

However, things are changing. People have completely embraced the laminate flooring approach. Natural wood looks wonderful, but consumers are getting interested in using different, less traditional, textures on their floors. There is no point in laying natural wood if you are going to stain it or distress it in a way that makes it look less like wood. So, right now, in many homes, laminate flooring is what is likely to go down on the floors.

Laminate Flooring

Mixing up colours and tones

One way of adding texture and interest to a floor is to mix several colours or shades together in one room. Laying blonde-coloured laminate and interspersing it with light brown and beige strips, looks really great. There is no doubt that more homeowners and designers are going to have fun with this mix and match approach to flooring.

Lounge

Keeping things light

2017 was all about extremes. Either ultra light or ultra dark, so some extent this will also be the case in 2018. Interestingly, the pendulum of style is swinging away from the dark to the light. It appears that we are still lean towards magnolia and minimalism despite interior designers trying to steer us back in the opposite direction.

But…getting warmer

However, there are two exceptions. Some homeowners do want something a little warmer. For them, chocolate brown and rosewood hues appear to be the answer.

Or…maybe not

Just to confuse you, the other big trend is whitewashed floors. This is not a reoccurrence of the stark white floor trend from about a decade ago, a time when all white rooms were the norm. The whitewash look is a bit more complex than that. Think a white floor that looks as if it has been distressed. It is a good compromise and a particularly good choice for homeowners who need to make their rooms look lighter and bigger.
