The Netflix Quandary

We are big fans of Netflix in our house and have ditched cable TV in favour of using it.

My mum lives in rural Dorset and just before Christmas a faster broadband service became available, so they had a new router installed, which gave me the chance to introduce them Netflix too.

Over her birthday my Mum dropped numerous hints that she wanted to watch The Crown, a Netflix original series that follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

Instead of buying a boxset, I decided to get them a Netflix Gift Card, which are available at many retail locations. Being new to Netflix and having not had an account before, they received a free month of service, in addition to the amount of the gift card. After the free month, Netflix will then start to deduct the monthly charge for their plan from their gift card balance giving them a whole year of TV.

After setting up their account and a brief training session, we left them to it.

Let’s just say the whole two series of The Crown were watched within a week!!

Mum is a binge watcher just like me!!

The problem is that now she has devoured The Crown, we need to suggest new things to watch and so far, our suggestions are not their cup of tea.

Hubby and I loved The Crown too, but also like our American TV shows like Designated Survivor, Jessica Jones, Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black. But after some dabbling into some of these series, they are not that keen.

This is where you come in………do you have Netflix?

Are there any, preferably British shows, that you recommend?

In other news there are some fabulous new additions coming to Netflix for the month of January, including ALL episodes of FRIENDS which are now streaming!!!!

Friends

I know my kids are very much looking forward to series 6 of the Adventures of Puss in Boots too.

So there you have it, some new recommendations for Netflix for this month, just for you!!

What series are you watching at the moment, or do you have one to recommend to my Mum?

  1. I ADORE the Crown. I’ve been watching Peaky Blinders too (but again, maybe not one for Mum…)
I watched a whole load of documentaries about stately homes such as Highclere Castle – I think it was called Secrets of Highclere. I really enjoyed it and there was “Secrets of…” other homes too 🙂

  2. I haven’t seen the Crown yet bu I do watch Netflix as well. I have been waiting to come back from my holiday only to be able to watch the new season of “Black Mirror”, which I find brilliant (but maybe not suitable for your mom).

  3. We also devoured The Crown in 1 week! Some time ago we watched Breaking Bad, I wasn’t sure at first but it quickly became addictive! There is also the follow up which we haven’t watched yet – Better call Saul.

  4. Netflix has loads of great British TV and I think there may even be a British section within the search page! Think of the classic British dramas of recent years and there’s a good chance it’s sitting in there.

Try Sherlock, Wallander, Luther, River, Jonathan Creek, Hinterland and loads more. For period pieces, there is Parade’s End, The Windsors, Victoria, Dickensian, War & Peace, North & South, Pride & Prejudice, Poldark and Daniel Deronda. I’d also recommend Top of the Lake, although it’s a little dark.

And what a great gift idea! 🙂

  5. The Crown is on my list! It looks so good. I am obsessed with Peaky Blinders, American Horror Story and Back Mirror. We definitely watch more Netflix than cable TV. I can’t imagine a world without Netflix now! x

  7. I don’t have Netflix but I really want to watch the crown so I might have to get it just for that. I know I can’t have the free month because I used that up years ago x

  8. I’m very much an American TV show kinda girl, so I can’t think of any British ones on there that they might like. Once Upon a Time has a lot of British actors in, though. Maybe they’d enjoy that?

  9. I’m not sure if it’s British but my Mum is absolutely loving Reign right now! I’ve been bingeing Friends since it’s been added but I’ve just finished Bitten and Grimm. I didn’t realise you could get gift cards for Netflix, what a great idea for someone wanting to try it

  10. I have used Netflix before, but only ever a free month trial here or there. I watched a documentary called Blackfish when I had it, very sad but very educational and eye-opening. I’m not really a fan of series like The Crown, hence why Netflix isn’t one for me. I can survive with EastEnders on the BBC iPlayer hehe x
