10 Things to Get Done Before Your Baby Arrives

You’ve probably heard it before: Once you’re a new mum, your life will be busier than ever, and certain things will never, ever be the same. While there are lots of pregnancy to-do lists out there, lots of them focus on essentials like decorating the nursery, choosing comfy shoes, and preparing a substitute to take over your duties at work. While these are important, now is also a time to focus on yourself and your relationships. With this in mind, here are 10 things to get done (all for you!) before your baby’s due date.

Bond with your partner.

Between upsetting pregnancy symptoms, the demands of work, and necessary daily chores, you might feel as if there’s very little time to connect. Make space in each day to bond though, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Watch some chick flicks.

Your friends will be there for you once your little one arrives, but it’s going to be a long time until your next girls’ night out. So take time to watch movies together and strengthen your bond, either over snacks at home, or over popcorn at your favorite theater.

Have a spa day or two…or three…

Most new moms are so busy taking care of their babies that they have little time left over for themselves. Pamper yourself with an easy-care hairstyle now, and indulge in a mani/pedi combo while you’re at it. Extra points if you go for a prenatal massage!

Read books just for fun.

Have a little time when you won’t be interrupted? Set those pregnancy books aside for a little while and allow yourself to indulge in some light reading.

Dress up!

Dress up in your favorite outfits while there’s zero chance of baby spitup or other unimaginable goo getting on them. Go out to dinner, go window shopping, or hang out with your friends while you’re at it.

Savor your favourite meals.

Whether you’re in the mood for breakfast in bed, Italian food, or homemade apple pie, relax and slowly savor your favorite foods now, while there’s no need to multitask. Sure, you can get a babysitter later on, but now is a great time to indulge.

Go out on the town!

Make it an early night if you have to, but take some time out for fun date nights with your partner or best friends. Catch a live show, go out dancing, or just linger over dinner at your favorite spot.

Enjoy an impromptu road trip or two.

Short day trips to local attractions and nature spots help you connect – take time out with your friends, your parents, or your partner. Listen to classic road trip tunes and relax! Your next road trip is likely to be a child-friendly destination, which is plenty of fun but a bit different than what you may have in mind now.

Indulge in a babymoon.

Plan a romantic babymoon if you can – even a short local “staycation” at a cozy bed and breakfast will do the trick.

Take time out just for dad-to-be.

New parents naturally focus on the needs of their little one, and dads often get the short end of the stick when it comes to mom’s attention. Treat your partner to special treats, and have some fun doing things that he enjoys. Focusing on him helps you too – your bond will be stronger and he’ll appreciate the time and effort you took to make him feel extra-special.

  1. Great tips, I remember when I was pregnant with my first I watched the entire box set of Sex & The City followed by both movies, we enjoyed a weekend away in Stratford-upon-Avon and I even dared to go clubbing when I was a week overdue for a work colleague’s leaving party!! She still didn’t arrive for another week – always on her terms haha xx
