Women’s football has come a long way in the last few years.
When I was growing up the only sports we were offered were Netball and Rounders and even when Abbey was younger, football was never on the cards for the girls.
These days it is widely accepted that girls can play football and here in Dorset we have our own league of girls teams that my goddaughters play in and our school offers an after school football club that is as popular with the girls, as it is with the boys.
As a family of Chelsea fans we not only follow the men’s team, but also follow the youth team and of course the ladies team – well they are top of the league!
Did you know that SSE are sponsoring the Women’s FA Cup Final between Birmingham City and Manchester City, for the third year, on Saturday 13th May?
SSE believe that everyone deserves the same opportunities, regardless of gender and in a genius decision, they have a ‘kids go free’ ticket offer to help make the game even more accessible to all, with adult tickets costing just £15 each.
Football for both boys and girls offers the opportunity to discover new skills, build confidence, make lifelong friends, gives the opportunity to be inspired and maybe even the opportunity to walk out in front of a passionate crowd at Wembley Stadium – an experience that cannot be beaten.
The recent launch of SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs will provide girls aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. SSE continue to show their commitment to increasing participation in the women’s game through this new initiative. The clubs will run from spring through summer on a weekly basis and aim to provide a fun and safe space for girls to learn the game and make friends.
SSE customers have been invited to put their energy behind the game, by being at the Final and enjoying rewarding experiences.
SSE is one of the UK’s leading energy companies, supplying energy to around 8.21 million customers throughout Great Britain and Ireland and are proud to make a difference!
Do you follow women’s football or have a girl that is passionate about the beautiful game?
Getting girls and women into sport is so important. Football is a great game for all .
The ‘kids go free’ ticket is an amazing opportunity to make sports accessible to all. I think it’s vital for every kid to be introduced to sports early in their lives.
I’m mad on football and have followed my team up and down the country. When I was at school I was in the five-a-side team but other girl’s school didn’t want to play us because we were a mixed sex school! I hope those days have gone.
So good to hear women’s football is being promoted by such a big brand! x
I have found even more reason to love SSE and glad they are supporting women’s football because in my time it wasn’t the norm
My daughter loves kicking a ball around. She enjoys it.
YES FOR WOMEN’S FOOTBALL! Amazing that it’s being celebrated much more widely now. What SSE are doing sounds brilliant.
I’m afraid I have little interest in football or any other sport but feel strongly that gender should not be a limiting factor in any aspect of life
I am not into football at all. But glad that women’s football is being promoted
I don’t actually follow women’s football, but I do enjoy watching it if it’s on TV. They’re so fit though it makes me feel like a right couch potato!! 🙂
Louise x
The sport has come a long way! My mummy used to play for Young Saints in Southampton (when it was The Dell), had her predator boots and her season ticket. She always felt a bit left out being surrounded by boys and only one or two girls. Glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves x
The Wildcat Girls’ clubs are such a good idea. We don’t have one near enough for my daughter to go, but I’m hoping they’ll roll out the scheme.
We are big football fans here and the boys watched it on the TV on Sat – We couldn’t go as Mini was at a tournament in the morning.
My girls have tried a couple of terms of football and they really enjoyed it. I might start looking for a proper team as they get older.
I think it’s great that they are now encouraging girls into football, hopefully more and more teams will get together.
What a great idea to make the kids tickets free – a cheap day out is always appreciated!
As for me, women’s football is a bit strange competition. But teen football is always amazing and free kids tickets is a good idea to involve more kids into this sport!
