Mummy Conversations – #Win £100 Amazon Voucher with Canesten

When I was at school I found sex education excruciatingly painful.

Sitting in a classroom with teenage boys and girls as a ‘late bloomer’ I was not only painfully shy but bewildered about some of the subjects that were talking about.

As I got a bit older and more aware of the changes that my body was going through I devoured teen magazines like Just Seventeen whose tone was sassy, confident and, despite acknowledging the full-body hormonal assault that is being an adolescent girl, full of positivity about the things that mattered – friendships, fun and life-size posters of the latest hotty and that all important problem page.

When I had my first child at the age of 18 I had no idea what to expect. I found out I was pregnant a few month into the pregnancy and was stupidly embarrassed when the doctor, haven given me my first internal examination, told me I had thrush. At the time I felt ashamed, not realising it was actually a very common condition, especially when pregnant.

When I had my daughter, I made a resolution to be as open and honest as I could be with her as there are lots of personal issues that might need Mum’s help and advice, including intimate health.

Canesten® believes that if you feel more comfortable with your own body you are more likely to reach your full potential. It’s always a parent’s desire to support their children to reach their full potential and help them become confident and educated individuals, feeling in control in all sorts of situations, and this should extend to intimate health too. This is why Canesten® wants to empower women to feel more comfortable, also when they discuss intimate health, including issues like thrush, with their children.

A lack of formal intimate health education during puberty means that when symptoms of vaginal conditions appear, it can cause worry and many teenage girls have to figure it out for themselves. With better knowledge, women can self-diagnose and self-treat knowledgeably and with confidence without having the embarrassment of seeing a GP.

More information about intimate conditions and Canesten® product range can be found on: www.canesten.co.uk/en/female/

  1. Totally agree with your message here! I’m going to be so open with my children, these things are the most important things to talk about!
