Exclusively from HEXBUG comes the VEX Robotics Robotic Arm – a completely functional construction kit inspired by real industrial robot arms.
Having just built the Meccano Micronoid Socket with Isaac which he really struggled with, I was slightly wary of his reaction to building the Robotic Arm, however, with the help of big brother Kian, he much preferred building this.
Now this is a complex kit and I would say that the minimum age of 8 is correct, however, they will need some adult assistance so treat it as a project you can do together.
Like LEGO sets, the instructions give a really clear, step-by-step guide about where each piece goes. There’s no guesswork involved, and consequently it’s easy to backtrack when you go wrong as the pieces are easy to snap together, or unsnap if needed, which we had to do at one point.
There are 350 small plastic pieces in the kit, so the first thing I recommend is to sort them into size order, putting similar pieces together.
Once completed, this is also a fabulous toy as it has four different actions:
- pick up objects with the articulated claw
- raise them up to 14 inches high
- extend 10 inches outwards
- rotate 360 degrees.
When you get fed up with the crane, you can take it to pieces, put it away for a while, and then build it all over again.
I was never good with lego but I am sure I can follow step by step instructions. This looks awesome might get it for my nephew when his older

This looks fab! My eldest loved anything like this although more often than not it was me who got stuck with the instructions, pouring over them until the early hours trying to work them out!!
This would be a great toy for my son. He loves finding out how things work and building stuff. It’s a very reasonable price too.
My eldest is mechanically minded, loves seeing how things work and putting things together and taking them apart so I can see him loving something like this when he’s older. It looks great!

That looks like great fun, my girls love the other hex bugs and play with them when they go to their friends as we don’t have any yet. The robotic arm looks just as good.
