Last weekend we were invited to stay at Harcombe House in Lyme Regis with English Country Cottages.
In a surprising twist of fate, not only was an old school friend of my husband there for a weekend break but we also discovered that it was the old boarding house of a former work colleague……..what a small world!
Enjoying a truly tranquil position in the village of Harcombe Bottom, close to the Dorset seaside resort of Lyme Regis, Harcombe House offers a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes and requirements and we were booked into stay in the Yawl Cottage.
The beautiful house is set in 9 acres of grounds with sweeping lawns and shaded woodland to explore.
The kids couldn’t wait to get outside to explore and found a playhouse, swingset and trampoline in one corner and somewhere to build a den and even a tennis court on the other side of the garden.
There are several apartments to choose from and each property is furnished to a good standard and enjoys shared use of an indoor swimming pool, hard tennis court, games room and well-equipped children’s playroom, complete with a friendly black cat who always popped in to say hello.
Without a shadow of a doubt the swimming pool was the kids favourite part of the whole break and we had the pool to ourselves on both days we were there for a good couple of hours.
The accommodation itself was very impressive and our first floor apartment was bigger than our house, with four bedrooms a generous kitchen / diner, a large sitting room and two bathrooms, one with a shower sink and toilet and the other with a bath, sink and toilet.
We did think that the kids would relish the opportunity to have their own rooms for a change but Sebby and Eliza ended up sharing in bunk beds, but Isaac enjoyed a double bed all to himself.
The kitchen was well equipped with a gift of Dorset Ginger Biscuits, tea and coffee and 2 pints of milk in the fridge. They also provided washing up equipment and dishwasher tablets so you could clean up behind you.
Finding the cottage in the dark was a little tricky, however, it was in the perfect location for exploring Dorset and East Devon and we made the most of our stay with a visit to the local beaches of Beer, Seaton, Charmouth and Lyme Regis.
If you are looking for a family friendly place to stay, I can highly recommend Harcombe House. The apartments sleep between 7 and 10 people so are perfect for trips away with friends and family.
Oh wow – the facilities look fabulous. I love that you have the use of a swimming pool on your doorstep and the garden looks like a wonderful place for the kids to explore x
This looks like such a wonderful, family friendly trip! I absolutely love Dorset and the surrounding area. There’s nothing nicer than being by the sea on holiday. It can be difficult to find something perfect but with the swimming pool and activities, looks like you did!
I love Lyme Regis and the whole of the Jurassic coast. We camped there a few years ago in the summer and enjoyed every single minute of it. Looks like you guys did too! 🙂
Oh wow that looks FAB! I love that you had a swimming pool and the activities available too. I went to Lyme Regis a lot as a child, we keep meaning to take the children but it’s on a long list of places to visit!
oh that looks really lovely ive never been there
Thanks for this recommendation, I am adding it to my list as for 2017 its all about weekend getaways in UK. Looks like a lovely getaway for the family
I’ve lived in Torquay before and found it freezing from November to April LOL but you guys look like you’re either well adapted to the cold or just don’t feel it?!
I don’t think I would want to leave these apartments as they are way bigger than our flat LOL Mini Me 1 still asks to live in the “holiday home” that was Centre Parcs!
Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow! How luxurious. Used to love a UK break but haven’t done it since I had the boy.
Looks like a perfect family weekend away. It’s amazing to have a swimming pool while you are on a break.
I think having space in holiday accommodation is a really big deal. This sounds like a great place to stay and somewhere I would consider
What a lovely getaway. Love the country cottage, oh wow with a swimming pool too. How cool. Lovely pictures Kara 🙂
The facilities look amazing and it is nice to see that you got a lot of space to move around in x
It’s funny, I read another blog post about a place in Devon, close to Lyme Regis, with cabins and a spa just the other day! Beginning to wonder if “someone” is nudging me to go there? 😉
Harcombe house looks lovely, very British, and I’d love to bring some friends and just enjoy some leisure time together, exploring the surroundings and eating at nice pubs.
