Anyone for Tennis? #GBTW

My Mum is Wimbledon obsessed.

When she gave birth to me many years ago on 21st June it was the beginning of her passion for the game as in those days they kept Mum’s in hospital for two weeks after having a baby, and she staved off boredom by watching Wimbledon on the TV.

She desperately tried to instill that passion in me by paying for me to have lessons as a child. Sadly, it was clear that I was never going to be Martina Navratilova, however I really enjoyed playing the game and we often used to hire out our local tennis court and have knockabouts with friends.

Now, I have to admit that I have not picked up a tennis racket for years until Britmums Live, where the Lawn Tennis Association had set up a mini court in one of the rooms. I challenged Joanne from CharlieMoos to a match and we had so much fun.

I forgot just how much exercise running around even a small indoor court could be and we were shrieking with laughter as we charged around trying to keep the ball in play.

In fact we had so much fun I have signed up for two FREE sessions near me during the Great British Tennis Weekend which is happening on Saturday 16th July and Sunday 17th July.

The kids will be doing a Mini Tennis session which has smaller courts, nets and rackets and lower bouncing balls. The LTA Mini Tennis session offers the perfect introduction to the sport, with all the fun and energy of the real thing and is suitable for children age 3 to 10 years old so even Sebby can take part.

Whilst they are doing their session, I fancied trying out Cardio Tennis which is a fun, sociable group fitness class set on a tennis court and open to people of all ages and abilities. The session is supported by motivating music and qualified instructors, plus I will get to hit lots of tennis balls during the class and have a great cardio workout at the same time.
I’m working with the Lawn Tennis Association on their #GBTW campaign. Sign up for your FREE tennis activity here

  1. My mum was glued to Wimbledon when I was little too, it’s funny how someone else’s enthusiasm rubs off on you isn’t it? We’re really looking forward to our sessions too, we’ve gone for a family session and an All Stars one for the kids.

  2. That’s such a cool story that you were born at Wimbledon time so you mum became a fan watching it in hospital! My mum also used to tell me about their 2 week post-baby stays in the 70’s. Not like now eh?
You and Joanne looked like you played a great game on that court at #BML16… I wasn’t such a great player but it was a load of fun! Great post #GBTW

    PS) Happy belated birthday!

  3. Tennis is my favourite sport but then I grew up in south west London and my mum was born in Wimbledon. There aren’t any public courts around here which is a real shame as we were able to play on proper courts provided by the council when I was a child. I’d love to find a tennis partner again.

  4. I would love 2 weeks in bed!!! I would love 2 weeks in bed watching Wimbledon! As it is, I’m at the end of my first week of Jury service!!! No TV! So I am missing my tennis. I didn’t have a go at the BML mini tennis…I spent most of the day exercising my jaw 😉

  5. My 80+ mother-in-law also loves Wimbledon! I find it so cute the way she’d watch it stoically, nodding her head when she’s pleased and shaking her head if she thinks whoever is playing badly. But she doesn’t really cheer, just nods or shakes her head! 😉
