Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring has finally sprung!

The sun may be shining but don’t forget to start your spring cleaning and prepare for chilly draughts and April showers.

We have made a good start to our spring cleaning regime here, mainly due to being forced into it by our Tumble Drier repair which forced us to sort out our utility room so the engineer could get to it.

Back in November we discovered that our Tumble Drier was affected by a product recall, as excess fluff could catch the heating element in the machine and cause a fire – you can check yours at safety.hotpoint.eu.

Thankfully we were having our washing machine serviced and the engineer advised that we would be safe if we followed the maintenance instructions that came with the machine, so even if you don’t have an affected machine it is important that you:

My Spring Cleaning Tips are to set a plan and tackle one or two things per day and get the kids to help:

Tumble Drier

• Empty the Filters after each use and pop your hoover in the the gap to catch any missed fluff
• Clean the condenser once a month. This can be done by hosing it off in the garden or in the shower
• Install a fire alarm near to where your Tumble Drier is installed (ours is in our ultility room)
• Don’t leave it on when you are not at home
• Keep a fire extinguisher close to the machine (which thankfully we have anyway)

Washing Machine

• Empty the filter at least once a month (mine appears to shred socks)
• Perform a Tub Wash with a cup full of soda crystals every month which helps keep the pipes clean
• Clean the powder / softener draw monthly

Dishwasher

• Push a Dishwasher cleaner through monthly

Descale

• Kettle
• Iron
• Steam Cleaner

Wash with warm soapy water

• Vacuum Cleaner bin
• Extractor Fan Filters

Clear Plugholes and waste pipes in the kitchen and bathroom (in my case this is my husbands job).

Bedrooms tend to me the part I least look forward to as getting the kids to help can be a huge challenge. One way I have found works is to either, wait until they are at school and do it for them, or, get them involved in the decision making and list any unwanted toys on eBay and they will see the return and can use their money towards something they are saving for. Isaac is also a keen participant in vacuuming.

Spring is also time where the garden appliances come back into play after a period of hibernation and we have had a major clearout of the garden shed. Check the lawnmower blade is still sharp and give it a spot of WD40 to lubricate it, as with the shears and secateurs. Also check the string in the strimmer before you start using it. In addition to this, the outside of the house itself may need checking over – gutters especially, after the winter spell.
