Summer means so many enjoyable things for the family: holidays, family days out, parks and sports. It’s also the time you’ll be switching on your ventilation system, if you have one, after leaving it unused over the winter. And, for the sake of the whole family’s health, that means time to have it serviced.
Why Have a Ventilation System?
Air-conditioning ventilation isn’t traditionally as common here as in countries like the US, but the scientific evidence is growing that poorly ventilated homes and workplaces pose serious health risks. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health points out that today’s double-glazed, sealed, heated homes lead to very poor indoor air quality, while the BBC highlights the various pollutants we’re trapping inside in trying to keep out the pollution from outside.
It’s not enough just to have a ventilation system, though. It needs regular servicing by a professional company, and Filtrex offer ventilation system servicing in Chelsea, as well as all over London.
Servicing Your System
A ventilation system is great when it’s clean and running efficiently, but the very fact that it filters the pollutants out of the air means the filters and ductwork can get dirty and become ideal places for mould, bacteria, viruses and pollen to breed.
The Guardian suggests that indoor pollutants could be particularly bad for asthma sufferers, but even healthy people can suffer. Some of the symptoms characteristic of the notorious Sick Building Syndrome common in workplaces and public buildings can also affect poorly ventilated homes — headaches, respiratory problems, skin diseases etc.
Who Should Service Your System?
It’s tempting to save money by doing your own servicing, which could be as disastrous as trying to service your own boiler. That doesn’t mean, though, you shouldn’t touch the ventilation system yourself. The filters will need to be cleaned on a regular basis over the summer, and if you’re a competent DIYer, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do that yourself.
At least once a year, though — preferably just before you switch it on for the summer — the whole system needs to be overhauled by professionals, who’ll replace any worn-out filters, clean out the ductwork and give the whole thing a service.
That’s common sense for your home system, but a legal obligation if you’re responsible for a workplace. And, in the same way, it’s in your interest to check that ventilation systems are being properly serviced anywhere you or a family member work or go to school.
Your family’s health is too important to ignore.
