Top Tips For Holidaying in the South West of England with Kids

We live in a beautiful country, one which I have made a resolution to explore more of.

As a very proud resident of the South West of England I thought I would share some of my top tips for visiting us.

The South West of England covers 9,200 square miles and includes the counties of Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, as well as the Isles of Scilly which offers plenty to see and do for young and old alike.

When anyone asks about things to do when visiting the south coast I always mention the South West Coast Path which totals 630 miles of stunning scenery including the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site which is somewhere to stand and stare through the millions of years of time and just say ‘WOW’ at the breathtaking scenery. There are been some recent rock falls due to the weather so now is a prime time for fossil hunting.

As Dorset is my home county we explore here regularly, but we are also frequent visitors to Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.

We are lucky to boast some of the best weather in the UK with warm and dry(ish) summers.  There are many types of holiday accommodation on offer, with budget caravan breaks aplenty, quaint guest houses and holiday cottages available.

John Fowler Holidays is a family-run business with holiday parks across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Each of their 14 parks is located in a picturesque location and their friendly staff aim to make each holiday truly magical!

They have a whole variety of accommodation suitable for each and every budget, from caravan parks in Cornwall to glamping breaks in Devon, there’s something for everyone. All of their holidays parks offer a wide range of facilities and entertainment which is why loyal holiday goers return year after year.

Some of our favourite family friendly locations to visit in the South West include:

Wookey Hole Caves, Somerset – Britain’s most spectacular caves and home to the legendary Witch of Wookey… are you brave enough to go inside? There is a whole day’s entertainment there for young and old with a circus, 4D cinema, crazy golf and even dinosaurs as well as the magical caves.

St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall – A very different day out and one we need to do again soon. You can stride across the causeway at low tide, or cross by boat at high tide to explore the castle.

The Golden Hind, Devon – Probably one of my favourite visits of last year. Situated in the quaint Devon village of Brixham is The Golden Hind, a full-sized replica of one of the most iconic ships from the age of exploration and is set up as a museum ship, giving an insight into what life must have been like aboard Sir Francis Drake’s Tudor Galleon.

At-Bristol Science Centre, Bristol – This is somewhere the kids are desperate to return to and is somewhere you can easily spend a full day in playing whilst learning at the same time.

Have you visited the South-West of England? Where is your favourite place to visit?

  1. I love Wookey Hole, we always stay at the Wookey Hole Inn when we go there. We live in Devon and I could list a million places that we like to visit! Some that spring to mind immediately though are Dartmoor, Salcombe, Ness Beach in Shaldon and Stover.
