Last week we joined Superworm on his forest adventure at Bolderwood, New Forest.
Bolderwood is situated just outside Lyndhurst, Hampshire and is home to a famous herd of Fallow deer which live in and around the site. There is a large deer viewing platform where we were treated to a clear view of the herd as well as a picnic / barbecue area, a cycle trail and 3 further walking trails which take you around part of the New Forest and to see trees that are over one hundred years old.
There is a small classroom and some toilets at the start of the trail and we purchased our £3.50 activity pack here which included, a mini Superworm book, trail leaflet with extra activities and string to make your own Superworm hero.
The self-led trail is approximately 1 mile long and contained ten panels, each with a couple of fun challenges to complete.
We did stop at the information centre to admire the deer skulls and skins but they were soon keen to get going. If I am honest we didn’t really need the activity pack as all the challenges were on the wooden panels, but we didn’t have the book at home and the kids have completed some of the challenges in the pack since being home.
The challenges were an added bonus to the trip and although Isaac took each one seriously, both he, Sebby and Eliza were just as happy steaming off and exploring the woods. Eliza was convinced they were in the real Pixie Hollow and found lots of places where fairies might live.
The best thing about these types of trail is that not only are they getting exercise in the great outdoors, but they are also learning and not realising it. Isaac read each plaque beautifully to his brother and sister and they learned all about the forest habitat and some of the animals as they completed each task.
At the end of the trail it leads you to the deer platform and we were treated to a spectacular sight as the deer just stood in the long grass looking at us as we were doing to them.
Our last reward was an ice cream treat before heading home.
The Superworm trail is open until 30th August.
