Big Fish Little Fish Launch Party Exeter

Last weekend we were invited to the Big Fish Little Fish in launch party in Exeter.

I have to admit I didn’t read the website before we went and happily bundles the kids in the car, promising the two hour drive to a kids disco would be worth it.

I had an email a couple of days before encouraging us to dress up in Jungle themed costumes, but with a long drive ahead of us I decided party clothes would be a better idea. We turned up to find both kids and some adults in full costume with faces painted, glitter, wings etc.

As we walked in, it was very clear that this was not your typical children’s disco.

BFLF are a music and events crew that put on family raves with all the freedom and excitement of a mini-festival, right in the heart of cities and towns.

Drawing on their experience as seasoned clubbers and parents they have created somewhere relaxed, entertaining, and where the adults enjoy themselves as much as the children and vice versa with grandparents, uncles, aunts and carers all in the mix.

I have to admit that I did feel out of place and the kids weren’t sure what to make of it. We were expecting a typical kids disco with a bit of Gangnam Style for Isaac and dance competitions. Instead there were proper DJ’s playing house music that I had never heard of.

There were other activities for the kids to do so we got stuck into the crafting table, run by Creation Station, and made some fun paper plate elephants.

Other activities included a large colouring wall, a play-doh table and outside of the main hall was a small play area for younger children with tents and tunnels to explore.

It was clear that most people attending knew each other and there were people dancing with children on their shoulders and mingling like they would in a nightclub, only with small people in tow.

Isaac, Eliza and Sebby soon started dancing when they discovered the bubble machine in action and the glitter cannons caused the crowd to cheer. At the end of the set a huge parachute was lifted from the stage over people’s heads and everyone got to dance underneath.

Despite BFLF being completely the opposite of what we were expecting, we all had fun and shall be checking in to see them at Camp Bestival this weekend. They are playing in the Bollywood tent on the 31st, 1st and 2nd with dance, a bit of crafting, great music and lots of daft fun.

Timings are subject to change at short notice so don’t go by this, check your programme when you arrive.

Friday – start at 3.30pm for two hours – DJs Joe Muggs (Boiler Room) followed by DJ Food.

Saturday – start at 1pm for 90 mins – DJs Matt Sanger (Little Chief’s So Positive Sound System) then James Tec (Plex).

Sunday – Start at 3.30pm for 90 mins – DJs Will Nicol (Northern Soul Rave Patrol) followed by Christian Laing (Buttoned Down Disco).

  1. This sounds like great fun! What a brilliant idea, I want to go now! It’s good that they have activities for the little ones who might not want to get too involved with the loud music.

  2. It sounds like a real children’s disco with a difference. It doesn’t sound like the kind of thing my children would enjoy at all as they have quite sensitive hearing, but it’s great that yours had fun and got dancing.
