Spring cleaning is one of those jobs few people look forward to but will immediately feel the benefits once it’s done. In fact, once you get into it you may find you enjoy some aspects. Either way, the relaxing feel of a deeply cleansed home cannot be beaten. So, whether you live in six bedroom mansion, posh Urbanest student apartment or two up two down, don’t put it off – get the Spring Clean done early so you can enjoy your home all the more.
De-clutter
This should be one of the most extreme aspects of your Spring Clean. Be disciplined, brutal even, and be honest with yourself – if there are items you never use or look at, think of someone who would get more use from them. Giving them to a charity shop or offering them to friends can be another benefit of your Spring Clean.
Compartmentalise
Some people find the task of the Spring Clean overwhelming. Try cleaning one room at a time to keep the task manageable. You do not even have to do the whole house in day or weekend – you could space it out over a few weekends.
Dry-clean Duvet and Freshen Up Curtains
Duvets should be dry cleaned twice a year and if you have a thinner duvet for the warmer weather this could be the perfect time to take care of your winter quilt. Curtains are also an easy one to overlook during the clean-up. Check the guidelines for cleaning before throwing your curtains in the washing machine.
Face Up to the Oven
Everyone’s least favourite job – invest in some good oven cleaner and enjoy the look of a sparkling cooker.
Cleaning Painted Walls
This can be a tricky task that people hold off doing for fear of discolouration. Be careful what you use, if water is not doing the job, try a small amount of washing up liquid. If this doesn’t work there are specially designed products such as Mr Clean Magic Eraser designed for the task.
Carpet Cleaning
If your carpets have got set-in stains which have somehow not been addressed by regular vacuuming, hire a steam cleaner to remove the unsightly marks.
Cleaning Bathroom and Kitchen Tiles
A mixture of half a cup of baking soda and two gallons of water can work wonders on tiles as well as grouting.
Countertops Stains
Mix half a cup of ammonia with a gallon of water for an effective way to clean away coffee stains and the like on your kitchen surfaces.
Organise Bookshelves
A neatly organised bookshelf can make a big difference to a room and you’ll be surprised how many people notice the effort. Order your books in size order or even colour-coordinate them.
Looking After Wooden Floors
Do not over-sand your wooden floors but rather keep on top of their upkeep. Simple measures like keeping plants on saucers or trivets will help keep them looking new.
