When we were invited to review the Scooby Doo Phantom Flyer I was a little excited as there is something about flying toys that makes me want to play with them too.
Navigate the Phantom Flyer with your hand! Watch him fly high into the air. Try and navigate it in the dark and watch the flyer spin and glow.
Sounds great on paper and Isaac couldn’t wait to get started.
First thing first, you need to get it out of the box and give it its first charge, which takes around half an hour. It comes with a base unit which takes 4 AA batteries and you simply pop the balloon on top of this unit to charge.
Half an hour isn’t too long to wait, although I swear Isaac asked if it was time every few minutes but then it was time to test it.
Because the toy is aimed at ages 3 and up, I had assumed it would be easy to control. Getting it airborne is simple, but controlling it is a whole other story. I couldn’t get a photo that wasn’t blurry!
The idea is to guide the Phantom Flyer with your hand, using a sensor underneath. It should then fly up to 2 metres in the air. As it lights up you can navigate it in the dark, watching it fly and glow for up to 4 minutes at a time.
It did lead to much laughter from the whole family as Isaac tried to stop it bouncing off the walls before it nose dived into the floor. The fan blades are so powerful that the balloon then darted around the floor, threatening people’s toes and I advise that you keep little fingers away from the blades when they are spinning as they could cause an injury.
By this point the teen came downstairs to see what the fuss was about. Because the baby was in the room and we were worried about him getting hit by the Phantom Flyer he took it into the kitchen, determined to show us how it was done. (please excuse the mess).

As you can see it is impossible to control. Trying to film Callan running around the kitchen attempting to control it had me in fits of laughter and because it has hit the wall and plummeted to the floor a few times it struggles to fly now.
Having it in the house was comedy gold however it really isn’t worth £19.99 I’m afraid!
The lovely SusanKMann reviewed it here and it looks like she had better luck with it than us.
wow quite a pricy item but it looks like it will take a bit of skills to use it
Sounds like a good idea but I doubt my girls would be able to control it either! It least it gave you some laughs!
Now I thought you did a much better job than us with it too.
This looks like a lot of fun x
LOL, it looks a lot of fun and weren’t you brave having it in the house!
Lol, looks like a lot of fun. You were very brave having it in the house though!
Looks like fun, shame it is tricky to control but at least it gave you a good giggle!
I could just see our glass lamp shades being destroyed by this! I think there are far better and safer toys to spend that kind of money on.
It sounds exactly like the problem we had with flying fairies last year. You were supposed to be able to control it with your hand underneath as well but it just kept flying up to the ceiling. It broke not long after we had it. THey seent another and that didn’t last much longer either. I was very pleased we hadn’t paid for it!
Looks like a lot of fun but I don’t think I’d pay that price for it!
Great review! It looks like a fun toy but I agree, the price is just too high.
I like the concept of a sensor to control it flying. wish it performed better though!
This certainly is more exciting than a standard helicopter and perfect for Halloween too. If It wasn’t for those pesky kids….
