A High Five for Sandworld

This bank holiday weekend we made a real effort to explore local attractions and events, with visits to the Fossil Festival in Lyme Regis, Dorset Knob Throwing in Cattistock and Blandford Food Festival.

We arrived at the Dorset Knob Throwing Festival as it opened and spent a good three hours enjoying everything it had to offer, but we decided to head off Weymouth for some sea air.  We have Merlin Annual passes so took the kids in to visit the Moshi Monsters who are visiting the Sealife Centre and have a look round all their favourite sea animals.

Every year I try to influence Hubby to visit Sandworld, but he never understood the appeal and if I am honest, the cost to get in put us off.  This year I have a High Five Card which is a family focused discount card for Dorset, and one of their promotions was that kids go free with each paying adult.  Finally I had my chance!

I have one word to sum up our visit to Sandworld.

WOW!!

The sculptures can take anything from five days to three weeks to complete and they have 2000 tonnes of Weymouth Beach sand at Sandworld.

This years theme is Books and Authors and there were stunning Sculptures featuring Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, Moby Dick and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to name a few.

I am obsessed a huge fan of Doctor Who and this has to be my favourite sculpture.

Just remember one thing – Don’t Blink!

The kids enjoyed the displays and had also been given a challenge to complete to win a lolly.  They had to see how many Mr Men they could find amongst the sculptures.

The sculptures are out of this world and I cannot believe they use just sand to create them.

There is also a small cafe and two play areas for the kids – one for under 5’s with plenty of buckets and spades to keep them occupied and another for older kids and adults where you can learn how to “pound up” the sand and make your very own sand sculpture with all the tools provided.

Eliza thoroughly enjoyed being taught how to make the perfect sandcastle and I plan on taking these new techniques with us when we next visit the beach.  Judging by our efforts below, the sculptors of Sandworld have nothing to fear.

If you are visiting Weymouth I highly recommend a visit to Sandworld – even hubby agrees!

The High Five Card is available to buy online for just £10 a year and offers you discounts on family days out, sporting activities, restaurants and more.

  2. The High Five Card sounds like excellent value. It looks like a great day out! The sculptures are amazing-I particularly like the Doctor Who ones too. My son would be scared of the angels though…

  3. I’m always so impressed by the people that make sand sculptures. Although I would totally freak if I saw one of those Dr Who Angels up close! X
