Toys that combine fun with style

When you have children, it’s generally fair to say that your home takes on a totally different look to the way it was before they arrived. You may have had a home that was perfectly styled and decorated before the pitter-patter of tiny feet and some people do manage to maintain a pristine home after becoming parents. Not all of us, though, are that skilled or have that much energy to keep house as perfectly as we did before we had kids. But one way to make this easier is to choose toys that combine plenty of fun with some style of their own.

A great example is all the classic wooden toys that you can buy. There’s an awful lot of brightly coloured plastic on the market, which may be lots of fun, but never really looks as if it had been designed to go with the rest of your home décor. In fact, big chunky plastic play items can really stand out like a sore thumb in a nicely decorated living room. It’s a practical reality though, that you’ll want the kids to be able to play so that you can be nearby – with them in the living room while you’re in the kitchen, for example.

So it’s just as well that many of the big plastic toys can also be found in wooden versions that are a whole lot more aesthetically pleasing. So if, like most parents, you’re going to get your children those big toys like a play kitchen or a play shop, it makes a lot of sense to choose something that is beautiful to look at – like the toys in the Great Little Trading Company range.

I’ve been reading some of the parenting articles on the GLTC Blog, where I’ve found some really handy recipes and ideas for things to do with the kids around special days like Halloween and Christmas. The people at GLTC obviously know what children like – you just have to look at the amazing range of role play toys they stock. And they also have great bits of furniture and accessories for children’s rooms. All their products have one thing in common; they’re as beautiful to look at as they are fun for the kids to play with. You can keep up to date on the latest offers and promotions from GLTC in Facebook.

The thing I like most about picking out stylish wooden toys for my children is the thought that some of these items will not only see them through their childhoods, but they’ll be things I want to keep and put away for when they have their own children. My mum did the same for us – and when she became a grandmother, she pulled out some of our old favourites from the attic. It has given me real pleasure to see the toys I used to play with being used again, and I’m sure it’s the same for my mum. You wouldn’t necessarily think that toys could become family heirlooms, but they have done in our family!
