Dyson DC59 Review

I must admit that I am a huge fan of Dyson vacuum cleaners and I was very sad when my DC01 finally gave up on me after nearly 10 years faithful service.

I briefly flirted with a Vax machine and it was the worst mistake I ever made as it was truly useless and then I inherited my Dad’s Henry Hoover when he emigrated to Cyprus, which I like on my hard floors, but it isn’t very good on carpet and it doesn’t reach up the stairs!

I was invited to a Dyson event showcasing the Cordless DC59 and it was love at first sight!

The DC59 Animal cordless vacuum cleaner is powered by the Dyson digital motor V6. The Dyson engineers explained how the 350W motor, 2 Tier Radial™ cyclones and a re-engineered nickel manganese cobalt battery combined to provide powerful suction.

They also explained how the latest motorised head with carbon fibre filaments aids in achieving high dust removal (something to do with static). Together these four technologies enable DC59 Animal to suck up as much dust as even a corded vacuum.

I have to admit I was a bit blinded by science, but then it was time to put the Dyson DC59 to the test!

The machine itself looks tiny and weighs just 2.11kg.  Thanks to its engineering the weight it easily balanced and it is so easy to change the attachment to make it like a push along vacuum cleaner as the above picture shows, or a hand held vacuum perfect for the stairs or highchair! The best way to put any vacuum cleaner to the test is to set it up against its rivals!  I was particularly curious to see how it performed against the Gtech Air Ram.  A good old dollop of “Test Dust” later and we were off.

The first test was on glass tiles, complete with a join which was about 3mm deep. The three test vacuum cleaners left a dust residue and the join in the tiles was still full of white dust.  The Dyson returned the glass to its beautifully shiny self and made light work of the dust in the join too!

The Dyson DC59 performed equally well on carpet too and can be seen demonstrated by Laura from Tired Mummy of Two below.

It also passed the baby test!

We were also given a sneak preview of the new engine of the vacuum cleaner that is currently being developed.  I did ask if they could create a real life Minion that would do all the housework for me, but that is a good few years off apparently!

Did you know that the man behind the Dyson is also behind the James Dyson Foundation which encourages young people to discover their own engineering potential, and aims to prove that engineering is anything but boring.  They send out packs to schools and colleges full of experiments to get young minds of all ages working.  I have given the information to my childrens schools as I think it is a wonderful idea, especially as it is the chosen career route of Callan.

We were lucky enough to be able to bring the DC59 home to test out in the “real world” and we couldn’t wait to put it to the test!

In the box were the hand unit, a long pole, various attachments, a charging cable and a wall hanging unit for easy storage.

WARNING: The next photo contains footage not normally seen!

My teenage son Kian volunteered to vacuum the stairs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since the DC59 arrived Kian has actually vacuumed several times for me – this is unheard of  so it goes to prove it must be good!

I have to see it works equally as well on hard floors as it does on carpet and even my sheepskin rug which you can see in the picture.  I love the fact that I no longer have to bump my Henry up the stairs to try and vacuum them – this is all you need.  It’s great for clearing up after crafting too – simply clip off the wall pull the trigger and vacuum up the mess – none of this plugging in / unplugging malarkey!

Cobwebs are a breeze too and it may also have been used to vacuum up a rather large spider that was taunting me (sorry).  The bin is easy to empty too – simply hold over your kitchen / outside bin and flick the red button – the bottom opens and the dust falls out!

The wall attachment needs to sit close to a plug and it takes up virtually no room at all.  I am still waiting for hubby to put ours up, but the cupboard where I want it to live is currently packed full of unwrapped Christmas presents!

The DC59 does come with a couple of minutes charge, but it does need a good charge before using properly.  Once the battery is fully charged it gives you 26 minutes of cleaning power and uses a trigger grip so it stops instantly if you need to change attachments or rooms.  It also has a boost button which is ideal for those more tricky tasks.

Is 26 minutes long enough?

It is in our house – I don’t tend to hoover the whole house in one go anyway, but it could be an issue if you live in a huge mansion!

  1. It’s an amazing piece of kit isn’t it! As soon as I took it out of the box the family wanted a go. Not that I minded though.

The one thing I am finding is that because its so powerful you don’t have to consistently go over the same area again and again.

Like the guys from Dyson said on the day, it’s all about changing your cleaning habits. Less but often.

As a treat I am letting my 9yr old vacuum her room this evening 😀
