Julia Donaldson is one of my favourite authors and when Moors Valley did fhe Gruffalo trail we did it a number of times and loved it.
It takes a completely different route to the Gruffalo trail which is fantastic seeing as we are quickly heading into winter. This takes you all around the lake and into the forest from a direction I had never taken before. The first challenge was to make a frame with your fingers and draw what you see.
If I am honest the trail was a bit of a slow starter but as we got further around there was more and more to do and it is a lovely walk (or run).
We had also been told to look out for 4 stick men as we went around the trail.
You don’t have to have read the book to enjoy the trail and there were excerpts of the story dotted around on trees which was lovely as I got to read those bits to the kids on route. There were even other short stories and poems dotted around, as well as identifying the types of trees we could see and questions asking what we use wood and sticks for.
The stick man trail was about a mile and a quarter, but the kids managed it without whining that they wanted to sit down. One of the favourite activities was building their very own Stick Man using the chenille straws we were given……
building a stick tower……….
and then building him a house farther along the trail.
Don’t worry if you’re not close to Moors Valley – the Forestry Commission have Stick Man Trails all over the UK and you can even download packs online to have your very own Stick Man adventures.
Oh next time we are down at Southbourne we need to go to Moors Valley! xx
