Falling from the Skies

Hubby is a daredevil – FACT!

Tie a piece of elastic to his ankles and he’d happily jump off a crane, put him on top of a really really high building and he would abseil down it and white water rafting is no problem at all.

Back in July he turned 40 and I had been thinking of things I could get him that were memorable.  I toyed with driving a tank as he wanted to do that, but there was something he has always really wanted to do, that he could have done on his trip to Las Vegas, but didn’t as he wanted to be sure he came home in one piece for Sebastian’s arrival……..a Sky Dive.

I researched various venues and decided to go with Go SkyDive at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury as it was fairly close, had facilities to entertain the kids and looked like a good set up.  I phoned and spoke to them and they told me what to expect and that they offered a gift package that came in a presentation tin so he had something to open on his actual birthday.

Hubby was very excited when he got his Gift Certificate, although he had to wait a few weeks to do his tandem jump as I had booked it for his holiday – something to look forward to.

We arrived nice and early on the morning of 23rd August and hubby booked himself in, before being taken off for his training.  He emerged looking like this.

The atmosphere was excitable although you tell the jumpers were all very a little apprehensive.  The weather was good, although it was a hazy day so we waited until the lists were announced.

As part of hubby’s present I arranged for him to have photographs and a video done of his jump, and, unbeknown to him had upped his jump from 10,000ft to 15,000ft so he could have more freefall time.  This did mean that he was on the second team to go up, so we all waited and watched the 10,000ft jumpers first.

The photographer, Jakub, was like Tigger – bounding about, making jokes and generally trying to relax hubby whilst Lee checked his gear.

And then it was time to go…………

Go SkyDive

We watched as the plane climbed higher and higher, sometimes disappearing from view behind the clouds.  It was quite hard to spot at times and took about 10 minutes to get itself into position.  We knew from the first set of jumpers that the plane slows for the jump and you can hear the engines change tone, so we were listening for that change.

I have to say it was really hard trying to catch them on camera.  We were told what parachute colours (Black and Yellow) he had prior to take off so once they were open we could spot him.  I am so pleased that I got him the photographer though as the pictures are amazing!!

It almost makes me want to try it for myself!

Hubby and Lee were in free fall for 8,000ft and then the parachute opened……..

Go SkyDive

and they glided a little more gently back down to earth………

and landed smoothly.

Asked if he would do it again, the response was “Hell Yeah!!””

Want to see what it is really like – watch Hubby’s video below:

A magic moment – definitely and was followed by another when Kian had a trial flying lesson straight after!

  1. I was so hoping you’d do a post on the jump Kara. What an incredible experience, hubby looks ecstatic! Brilliant photos too. Tank driving is really good fun by the way, I’ve done it! Thank you so much for sharing with #whatsthestory

  2. Wow, this really is one step too far for me. He is one very brave man! I wrote about some of the ‘brave’ things I’ve got upto this year but seriously, this is a definite no for me! Great pics 🙂
