British Gas Diving Championships 2012

There are not many sports, other than my beloved Chelsea that I really enjoy watching, however I do always make a point of tuning in to watch Diving, Skiing and Figure Skating.  A few weeks ago @BGswimming were running a twitter competition  to win the chance to see the British Gas Diving Championships 2012 (Selection trials).  You had to tweet a message to them with the hashtag #iwoulddiveinto

As it was very hot and sunny at the time (remember then?), I tweeted “#Iwoulddiveinto a swimming pool of Mr Whippy Ice Cream and the diving board would be a Flake!”

I never expected to win, but when I got the tweet to say I had I was over the moon!

Upon the email arriving with the details, I realised that it I was working, and as my business is very new I couldn’t go, however, my husband and son were more than willing to take my place!

The event we had tickets for took place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on Friday 8th June.  As it was such a distance, hubby and son made the sensible decision to take the train.  Luckily we have a friends and family railcard which entitles the adult to half price rail fares and the child to a 60% discount.

British Gas Swimming were kind enough to also provide a night at the Sheffield Hilton Hotel as part of the prize too and the boys took great delight in gloating telling me about all the facilities that were on offer and relayed in great detail how they spent some time in the pool and spa facilities.

The boys got to watch the Mens 10m Synchro final and the Womens 3m Synchro final and they loved every minute but were most excited about seeing this bright young hopeful!

Tom Daley Warming up

The venue, by all accounts was superb, if a little warm.  They were given some inflatable batons that you bang together to use to cheer the competitors on.  These have caused much amusement with the little ones since they have brought them home too!  I must also thank Morag for looking after them so well too.

Apparently they performed some bizarre rituals before each dive

Hubby is now an expert on what constitutes a good dive, and we even watched the remaining qualifiers on the computer when he got home.

Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield receive their Gold Medals
There were a couple of disappointments on the day.  They were VIP’s and were promised a buffet and possibly the chance to meet the diving stars, but apparently this wasn’t to be.  They were surprised at how short the event was too, lasting around an hour.  This did, however, give them time to explore the delights Sheffield has to offer.

They had a fantastic time and we will all be banging our batons and cheering on the Olympic Diving Team from our sofa, as we didn’t manage to get tickets to the main event.
Thank you British Gas Swimming, they had a fabulous time!
